Popular with the Discriminating Consumer?

I've been pondering for a while... aren't there an awful lot of guns that the kind of people who frequent a gun forum consider to be popular, yet they really aren't?

I shall endeavor to explain. You guys all know what an AR15 is, what a CZ 75B is, what a Benelli Nova is, etc. etc. Maybe you don't have one maybe you do but you know what it is and it seems like a fair number of people have them because they talk about them all the time.

And yet, even if your collection is small, if you were to list off your babies to a less interested party, odds are pretty good you've got something a lot of people just haven't heard about.

I think a lot of things that are popular with the "gun culture" are not that big outside of it. For instance the XD pistols. Sure a couple of chain shops have picked them up and it seems like they fly off the shelves, but compare the number of XDs sold next to the Beretta 92 or just one model of Glock.

And the thing about it is, I'm not really talking about hard to get or even very expensive guns here per se. Honestly, how many people in the general public drool over say the K31?

We could extend this further to just about any platform imaginable for any job imaginable I think. What's something you can think of that only the more discriminating consumers seem to appreciate?

Euc - many folks, even some shooters included will I am sure base their ''knowledge'' quite a bit on Hollywood. Add to that some gun rags article info and that might be about it.

I can say with honesty that even after being into shooting as long as I have - near an adult lifetime - I am still ''discovering'' other guns I had not come across - often old classics but also I must confess I am not always ''up there'' with the new stuff on the market. In fact forums help me stay in touch a lot.

My most obvious example for your category would be the R9 - ''The Raw what?'' LOL!

Then too there are somewhat ''specialist/enthusiast'' guns too, like perhaps my BFR. I doubt too a lot of ''run-of-the-mill'' folks would know a CZ-52 or many other C&R examples.

Then too - there will probably be huge numbers of people who are aware of the famous "Colt .45" and when they see a Gov't A1 will nodd in recognition. Whether however those same folks would gain any meaning from ''Kimber'', "Wilson", "Les Bayer'', SA, etc is another matter - and that may include many ''ordinary'' gun shops too!

There are probably two or three main gun owner categories - the first could be the ''gun owner'' to whom probably ''a gun-is a gun-is a gun''! Then some middle ground where most major and obvious makes are known about and maybe owned.

Finally is perhaps your ''discriminating'' category at the top - folks like many of us who are enthusiasts and seek things outside of the usual - for either extra quality or special purpose etc.

Question I'm Still Waiting

For SOMEBODY on the forum to post a comment or thread stating that they have actually handled & fired the I.M.I. Barak. Because the price is right & it's made by Israeli Military Industries which is a PLUS...& NOBODY knows much of anything about it...except for the fact that it's slightly odd looking.

My Browning Hi-Power seems to always attract attention. One of my favorites (that I don't own) is a Swedish Mauser in 6.55mm.
