First trip to the range tomorrow -- any pointers?

Any and all tips appreciated. Tomorrow I go to the range with my CCW instructors to get a little practice/mentoring in before I take the class next month. (YAY! I'm so excited!!!) I haven't been to a range in at least 15 years, and then it was just one day, and shotguns only.)

So, any tips/pointers? Range etiquette?

I know to listen thoroughly and do exactly what they tell me.
I know to wear comfortable, well-fitting clothes and a shirt with a good neckline so I minimize hot brass down my collar.
I know not to turn around with any weapon in my hand, no matter what, to place the gun down and THEN turn around, and keep my finger OFF the trigger until I am good and ready to shoot.
And when someone says "stop," you freeze!

The instructors are bringing protection and I think a .22 for me, and ammo.

So other than that, I would love some advice from those more experienced!

Also, I was going to being coffee and muffins (as we are going early) as a thank-you gesture, but there's no food allowed on the range though, right? What with the lead and all? I'm assuming it would be a dumb move then.

Thanks!

My main advice would be to do the things you have already mentioned and relax.
Since this is something new to you, don't let your nerves and tension get the best of you.
On every trip to the range I do my best to clear my mind of everything except me and the target. As I'm putting on my eye and ear protection I take a few deep breaths and try to let my back and shoulder muscles relax.
Tell yourself this is going to be fun, try not to worry about your performance, if there is something you are doing wrong the instructors will correct you and help your with your questions.
Have fun and enjoy

Relax, listen, and have fun. If you can do those simple things it will be a good day at the range for you.

Good luck.

Try to get some human silhouette targets and use those if possible.

There are many styles available and configurations available these days.

Grip your firearm hard. In an actual self defense scenario you WILL be keeping a very tight grip on your firearm. It's an auto-instinctive human reaction to a perceived deadly threat. You might as well get used to it now.

Be mindful of your proper safe gun handling methods. Have fun.

Lots of good advice, just remember to relax. From what I've seen and been told, untrained women are typically better shots than untrained men. Have fun and stay safe.

All of the above is excellent advice. My .02 is don't forget to breathe. As one stated earlier, take a few deep breaths as you put on your gear. Relax your neck and shoulders.

Place your weapon on the tray in front of you at the range. Ammo to the side. Move everything that is nonessential out of the way. Take a few more deep breaths.

When the instructor says to load the weapon, point it downrange, load the weapon and breathe. When you site the target, deep breath and exhale. Squeeze the trigger, and breathe again. Amazing the calming effect shooting something has.

Unless you have been shooting for a while, you find that your instinct is to hold your breath. Think about it and consciously remind your self to breath.

Good luck and have fun!!!!!!

google Jeff Cooper and the 4 rules (of gun safety). Memorize those, then relax and take instruction.
