Indoor Bullet Box

I am considering building a 4 foot by 8 foot Bullet Box for .22LR fired from my Glock 26 using the Advantage Arms Conversion Barrel from approximately 15 to 18 feet away.

Does anyone know what kind of backing material I would need to use to prevent penetration through the back of the box?

My initial design ideas are to use a 2x8 wood frame with 3/4" plywood for the back and possibly a steel plate and/or rubber sheet to contain the bullets with a thin sheet of plywood for the front.

I have not yet found the data necessary to calculate the forces generated by 40 grain .22LR bullets.

As a side benefit, it will make good cover in case of a home invasion.

You'd be likely replacing wood/rubber pretty often. a 1/2" steel plate will stop most of your rounds.

I may be misunderstanding your original concept, but the way I read your post you are talking about stopping the bullets cold in some sort of boxed enclosure.

A bullet trap uses angled metal plates (or in the case of some really cool old ones a snail-cone like enclosure) to deflect the bullets inward and rob their energy, trapping them inside the device.

Simple energy calculation:

velocity squared X bullet weight in grains divided by 450240 ( a constant) will give you foot/pounds of energy.

Bullet trap is for sure the way to go,. My parents had one when I was growing up and they would shoot 22's and 38's in allot,. Wonder what happened to that??? Hmmmmmm

I'd say 1/2 is good. It's a 40 gr bullet, guesstimate of around 2100 ft/s out of the muzzle, only 15 ft away. That's a lot of energy. Thinner and you might have to replace it often; especially if you shoot a lot and are accurate.

Also, angle it from top to bottom away from you so that you don't have ricochets back to you or at someone else.

1/2 steel plate will work for the back. angle it toward the back to trap the bullets. they make them,,look on the net for one. might be cheaper and easy over making one.

1/2" steel plate is going to stop ALL of the 22LR rounds and more as long as you hit the plate. And that 1/2" steel plate is HEAVY.

The last one is a purchase type trap, but you can see how it is made. If it were me and I was doing this, I might take the idea of the ready made and make a few modifications. The trap area would be the same but I might utalize the bos design to keep any splatter down and too, it would reduce the noise.

I personally like the welded one from Miller. I would weld that one mainly because of the metal side to keep things properly inside the trap itself.
