No need to spend anything. Smith & Wesson will fix it free and it will come back with a 5.5lb trigger.

I've had a SW40VE for right at 2 years now. About 1000 rounds through it (I don't get to shoot much) without any problems what so ever. Never rejected a single round. It is my primary carry mainly because I can't afford a $1000 gun. I like it and trust it. The trigger lightened up and smoothed out after a while but it is still tough. I like it that way since there is no external safety.

I have both, There is a trigger job on the S&W Forum that can be done, Simply remove a couple of springs that do nothing but increase trigger pull wieght. I have not had a single failure in either, close to a 1000 rounds through each. It is accurate, and fairly concealable. If you can get it at the right price it can be a real steal.

Thanks all for your replies. I'll forward this thread on to my dad. And it will be a defense weapon and not a range queen. He had his business broken into the other day at around 4:30am. He's usually the first to arrive at around 6am. I had already helped open his eyes, but that sealed the deal. Think I can probably even get to him to spring for my CCW course expenses after this

I would go with the XD, its a very reliable weapon and shoots well, and most people say it feels great in their hands which in turn helps them to shoot better, granted I know this might not be the case for everyone who has shot the XD but the people I have talked to say this.

I have an XD .45 5" myself Haven't had the chance to let my father shoot it yet though. He only owns one auto at the moment that I'm aware of and it's a .25. Better than nothing, but a bit light for a defense round. I've always thought of him as a "revolver type" as that's what he mainly owns. Was surprised when he asked me about a Sigma, and since I wasn't sure, I decided to ask the people that were sure

I love my XD, by the way

I will wade in on this one late. I own a Sigma .40 and love it. I bought mine new in late '97 and have put countless rounds through it and I can't remember it having any jams or other issues. It did just recently start having a very high rate of light strike misfires (I would estimate around 40%). I called S&W customer service, they mailed me a return Fed-Ex label and they had the gun back in the mail to me about 7 working days after they received it. I haven't actually received the gun back yet, but I talked to a customer service person and they verified that it was fixed and back to Fed-Ex to be delivered to me.

For the money spent (-$300) I couldn't be happier. The trigger pull is sort of heavy, but once I had spend some range time with it, it became just part of how the gun fired and it didn't bother me at all. I wish they made a more compact one; I would buy it in a heartbeat.

S&W M n P

My brother and nephew were looking at the sigma, M&P, & xd.

they both went with the M&P .nephew got the .40 standard.

Brother got the 9mm compact. Nephew wishes he got the compact also.
trigger was way smoother on this gun , as were most of the ergonomics.

Hope this is not to late
