Magazine Capacity - NJ

So I know in NJ on a rifle we are limited to a magazine with 10 rounds. Does that mean I can own a 20 or 30 round magazine, but not use it in the state. Or is illegal for me to own a magazine over 10 rounds?

The legislation also prohibits any firearms which are substantially identical to any of the above firearms; any semiautomatic shotgun with either a magazine capacity exceeding six rounds, a conspicuous pistol grip, or a folding stock; a semi-automatic rifle with a fixed magazine capacity exceeding 15 rounds. Any magazine with a capacity greater than fifteen rounds is prohibited, even if there is no semi-automatic firearm to accompany the magazine.

According to the link it is illigal to purchase an ar-15. Interesting, I know someone who just bought one and I think I've seen them in stores.

"Substantially Identical" Provision in the State's Assault Firearms Laws dated August 19,
1996 and reproduced in paragraph 2 above, are considered to be substantially identical to a
prohibited firearm and continue to be defined as an assault firearm.

capable of holding more than 15 rounds of ammunition to be fed continuously and directly
therefrom into a semi-automatic firearm. A large capacity ammunition magazine that has been

cease to be defined as a "large capacity ammunition magazine." An ammunition magazine, which
has been temporarily blocked or modified from holding more than 15 rounds, as by a piece of wood
or a pin, is still considered to be a "large capacity ammunition magazine."

The laws are clear as mud. My friend has a Bushmater AR. Is it legal, I would think not.

So if searching something like gunbroker, I guess searching for ar-15 is narrow enough.

Not quite, Bushmaster makes "ban model" AR type rifles that are legal in NJ. "AR 15" is used as a broad brush generally, but in terms of the NJ legalities, it's targeting a specific model, not all rifles that are lumped into that category. Searching for "AR15" will turn up hundreds of guns that you can't get in Jersey.

Am I hearing it right - if my pistole has a 12 round mag it is good to go in the PRNJ - as long as I do not have JHP bullets in the mag.

The reason I ask is I figure that the Thule Amendment will pass the next time - after McDonald/NRA vs Chicago - and I might have to wonder through that swamp....
