>>Relatively positive article. The woman interviewed sounded pretty rational. One thing that was conspicuously missing, though, was the discussion as to whether any of the women buying handguns in Chicago could reasonably expect to get a concealed carry permit.<<

Illinois has no concealed carry law or endorcement, probably never will.

One thing that makes women wake up are articles like these:

Cops: Woman Raped in Wal-Mart Parking Lot With Baby in Car - Local News | News Articles | National News | US News - FOXNews.com

Illinois as well as Wisconsin refuse to issue any carry permit or recognize the permits of other states. At the very least, the lady citizens are taking more responsibility of firearm ownership and training for protection because inadequate, inferior and or rediculous gun laws cannot provide it.

My wife, and ex-Illinoian, recently accquired her WV carry permit and is now the proud owner of a Ruger LCP .380. When she travels back "home" however, the LCP must be put in a safe place in her vehicle so it won't jump out and harm anyone, with one exception. There seems to be a relaxation in the Illinois law that you can at least keep the weapon in the "glove box" in a car. Not sure all the criteria, but it's a baby step for the Land of Lincoln residents.

This isn't news to anyone who's been paying attention in the gun shops, at gun shows, or on the range for the past couple-three years. But it is wonderful to hear - and even more wonderful to know the mainstream media is becoming willing to report such things in a positive light.

When a woman finally realizes that almost any man around her could kill her bare-handed, if he wanted to, then for a while she WILL be afraid. It's something we have to deal with. Everytime we go out on a date we are putting our lives in the hands of someone we barely know. It's a bit daunting.

Women need to be encouraged to get extra training, and training places need to have more women-only classes. Too many of us are wary of men-only classes, or those for LEO.

I, for one, would love to go to training classes (besides the bare minimum gun safety class). But as a fluffy middle-ager, I don't think I could keep up. Therefore I don't go. Therefore I have to deal with not being as trained as I would like.

We should probably send thanks to the various media who do show gun rights or gun defense in a good light. A little pat on the back can go a long way. It's even something for a writer to show his/her editor -- "See! There are people who agree!"

Please don't let size or gender stop you from doing anything you want to do, please.
Hey, I'll bet a lot of the guys in tactical training classes aren't Chippendale's dancers, or even close. I'm not the skinny minnie I used to be, but I refuse to let my looks or gender deter me from anything I chose to do. I haven't let either stop me before and in middle age I don't plan to start now. You can be anything you want, as long as you put stereotypes behind you and go for it.

Ha! I've been to Illinois Gun Works. That's where I fired my first handgun!

I dunno what you mean by no endorsement. The Illinois Sheriffs Association passed a resolution this year voicing their support of Concealed Carry for Illinois citizens. Everyone in the southern parts of the state want it. Many in the north do as well. 91 of the 102 Illinois counties have passed Pro 2A resolutions. But Illinois is run by Cook County and the Chicago machine. Things are moving forward though. HB182 was signed into law by the governor about 2 months ago which allows people to carry concealed or openly on someone elses property where you are an invited guest and have their permission to carry.

The glove box and center console are now legally considered a "Case" that can be used to store your unloaded firearm. You may have loaded magazines next to it but not IN the gun. As with any "Case" used to transport a firearm in Illinois it must be shut completely so that no part of the gun is exposed and not opened while driving or you are in violation of the law. So, do not store any important vehicle documents in the same place as the firearm because that would be very bad if you are ever pulled over.

Please, do not let that stop you! There are plenty of "Fluffy" and even "DAAAAMN!" and possibly "OH HELL NO!" guys that attend tactical training courses. No one at these events will ever discourage you from participating with them! So get out there and get the training you want, its waiting for you!

Women and guns

Here in Florida, when you apply for or renew your CCW permit, the form asks your "occupation" The top 2 are: Nurse and waitress.
On the ranges and at gun shows there seem to be a lot of women.
A lot more than when I lived in Western NY State.
