The only thing that would get me away from this odd of a caliber is the comparison you kind of already made. Its kind of like buying a Glock 19, and a Walther P5c. Both are compact, European 9mm handguns, both well respected and both have pretty much equal power to do the same kind of job most things comapred. However go t the LGS and try to find new sight, holsters, grips etc. for a p5 and then the same for a G19. The .308 is just a better overall choice logistically other than being able to say you have something different than the next guy.

If you really want a great round (and don't mind a little more recoil) look at the 300 Winchester Short Magnum (or the original .300 Winchester Mag). It does everything the .257 Wmag does but with a bigger bullet. Recoil is of course heavier but IMO not too bad. It is also a very easy round to reload and since it's a .30 cal you can get bullets from 100 up to 220 grains for it. I love mine!

I kind of got that feeling last night on the thread so I started straying a little broader. Hope I didn't muddle you up too much. The way I would purchase would be-
If you don't own a .308 I would purchase that caliber to practice/learn before moving into a true "wildcat" boutique rounds. HotGuns/actimmy brought up very good points that didn't make it out of my mind clearly
