This question may be elementary but are steel casings bad on extractors? I'm shooting some Russian 7.62 x 39 ammo and I was wondering if that would speed up wear and tear on the extractor.

I haven't heard much beyond the "non reloadable" issue with steel.

Over 350 rounds of Wolf steel case through my Glock 21 and not a FTE yet.

In an AK of course I don't worry but handgun? I am ambivalent I guess tho the steel used is far from hard - I assume it has to be drawn and so must be relatively soft.

On balance I'll stick to brass or Al - but would not worry unduly if using some steel in limited qty. Not sure if there is any real definitive proof for or against either way.

I haven't heard news either way, but I've put many hundreds of rounds of steel stuff through my SKS and have had no problems.

Haven't put much through a pistol, though.

If it's not causing you any extraction problems then I'd say shoot it up.

Ditto Chris that the Extractor should be have a metal hardness greater than the softer annealed steel cases and should be OK.

I have never had a problem with AKs or SKS rifles after thousands of rounds. I have heard that it causes problems with the extractor in an AR-15, but I haven't used any steel case in mine.
Handguns - my 1911s won't feed steel case at all...... so I do not know about wear and tear on anything.
Personally (though this goes against what several instructors have told me), I would tend to try steel case in about anything and if it ran, then I'd use it and watch the extractor. It seems to be the only thing mentioned as having problems.

Ive just about finished a K's worth of Wolf .45 HB, Through my AMC hard Baller and not a bit of problum. It is a little dirtier than Mil. or US Com. but havent detected any unusual. ware on the gun(Pistol) no FTE or other.

AKs and SKS's love to shoot that crap. They don't want fancy rounds. I've put 100rds of so through my GLOCK 26. Not a single problem but I quite using it because it felt like sandpaper when two cases were rubbed together and didn't like the thought of feeding it through my 26. But when I get an AK, Wolf will probably be the only thing I use.

I'm personally up in the 50+ cases used of 9mm and .45 ACP in pistol stuff alone. I have yet to replace an extractor or have issues with anything other than the abysmally defective AO Thompson (which, ironically, blew extractors on every ammo *but* Wolf in my last trials).

My Sigs, HKs, Glocks, S&Ws, Uzis, Walthers, et al eat the stuff like candy and I'm impressed with the consistency in the stuff - I have yet to have a dud, squib, or problem that's ammo-related.

The only problem I have ever seen is that the old lacquer cased stuff would jam my Carbon-15 pistol if I did a couple beta dumps through it and left it chambered with safety on on the third - but you could have probably lit cigarettes off that barrel at that point and the lacquer was never designed for those temperatures. The new poly stuff, though, has no such problems.
