I hope the soldier recovers and gets the help he needs!
This sort of thing happened at a local range in my area. Since the occurance the range instituted a new policy. Their policy is they will not rent you a gun unless you came into the range with a gun.
We also had a gentelman walk into a local gun shop asked to see a pistol. He took the pistol pulled ammo out of his pocket loaded it (while running out of the store) and shot himself outside the store.
I guess no matter what if you are hell bent on killing yourself you will do it!!!!!

Can the range in some strange way be held legally/civily responsible for this incident? That'd be a true shame.

Not likely for deterrence, but definitely a liability protector. Just in case someone questions whether or not he shot himself or if some crazy unsafe situation caused it. Although, the gun in hand usually verifies it, but people will try anything to push the blame. That would definitely be a tape handed over to the authorities for them to keep. I wouldn't want the liability of it getting out all over the internet or something.

(Crap, I rambled again.)

It's happened at a couple of gun ranges down here in FL, but not in the last year or so.

Very Sad event...I Hope that he'll end up being OK but, bad place to catch a bullet at point blank range.
He has probably succeeded in given himself a lingering fate a whole lot worse than a quick and painless death.

My sympathies go to this guy’s family and to the owners of the range.

However as for him, I’m content in my belief that when one commits suicide they don't go to the happy place ... intruding on the lives and livelihood of other people for such a selfish act just doesn’t get sympathy from me.

If one must off themselves they should have the decency to do so in such a way that someone else isn’t forced to clean up the mess.

sorry if that sounds cold.
