Defensive Knives & Other Weapons Most people that carry a gun also carry a knife or other weapon as a backup. Finding a good blade is often harder than finding a good pistol or revolver.

Anyone want to get rid of some old/damaged knives?

I got a new spyderco sharpmaker to use on some really nice expensive blades Ive recently bought, and im determined to get the hang of it (before USING it on these expensive blades). The problem is, I dont have any 'practice' knives. I have serrated steak knives and some cooking knives with micro serrations but no dull knives that would be good to practice on.

I thought about just buying some knives at walmart but they are brand new and a little expensive and it seems silly to buy them, dull them down and then sharpen them again.

I thought about looking for garage sales but that seems like I could run around town all day without much luck.

Anyway heres my idea: Ill gladly paypal you a few bucks (or name your reasonable price) plus shipping for any of your old knives even ones without handles, just dull old pieces of junk, so I can practice.

any takers?

MikeGoob, sorry, I don't have any old dull knives as I also own a Sharpmaker . I am wondering a couple of things though. Did you just get the Sharpmaker with the brown and white ceramic stones? If so, do you have any other sharpening equipment? I ask this because the brown and the white stones do well for edge maintenance, but are pretty slow if you need to remove a fair amount of material. I also bout the diamond stones as well as a DMT Course Diasharp stone( http://www.dmtsharp.com/products/diasharp.htm ). These work a lot better if you really need to remove some material. The Sharpmaker is a fantastic tool!! I have gone for 40 yrs just removing material on my knives. Now I get a razer sharp edge .

yep the brown and white stones came with it.

Im not too skilled without the 'angled helper block' that comes with the spyderco. Id be wary of trying my $200 knife on one...

Also with 'diamond coated' stones: doesnt the diamond powder rub off and then the surface is pretty much useless?

The DMT stones are very nice as well as the Spyderco Diamond rods. With proper use, they should both last for a long time.

$15 is too expensive for a knife to practice on?

well the point is I want a knive thats gone dull with use. It seems wrong to spend 15 on a knife and then scrape it on the sidewalk. Sure I could but Id rather buy someones old junk knives.
