Defensive Knives & Other Weapons Most people that carry a gun also carry a knife or other weapon as a backup. Finding a good blade is often harder than finding a good pistol or revolver.

Eirerogue;

I have the Tarani trainer and use it quite often, but like raevan suggests, there's nothing like flow drills and movement with the real thing to keep you honest in the real world of bladework.

Jchoo,

If they actually made that product, I would consider it, believe me.

Ever tried to extend or retract a Kerambit with gloves on?

It's not going to work with this knife design, but thanks for the thoughts on that.

Here's a photo of the actual blade that grabbed my hand on a pass through.

Well, with a friend like yourself you don't need enemies...I don't think this will be the last wound given your approach to training.

Good luck!

JimmyC;

Well, with a friend like yourself you don't need enemies.

I'm my own worst enemy I suppose in many areas of life and not just training.

The wound has healed, the stitches are out and there is no tell tale sign of the zipper, just a faint red line where the cut was at this time.

The EMT who sewed on me did a fanatastic job and knows, like yourself, it probably won't be the last time he hears from me with something like this [ this one wasn't the first time bitten with blades ]

I don't fear them as some do, I've learned to work them hard and fast in dynamic situations as it will happen if I ever have to use it on the streets. It's a confidence builder to be able to move them quickly through the drills, and so when you get bit, you learn a little more about the tool you'll use in the real world.

amen Bro. There's a whole different intensity to tapping or flow drills when "it's live." We typically use our carry knife with electrical tape over the length of the blade when doing drills.

I feel your pain to the training injury- I broke my middle and ring finger of my right hand while stick boxing in 2003.

That will be a cool scar...

Just out of curiosity, do you also practice drawing / re-holstering with a loaded chamber, "for realism"?

Nah, thats not necessary as with the blades, I get plenty of practice at drawing/reholstering with the guns, wouldn't think of using an airsoft for practice at those skills

Yes sir, there is. That intensity will keep you sharp, sorta speak hey.

Here are pictures of the wound just a few weeks later, took the stitches a week ago yesterday.

It's almost like it didn't happen, small red line thats the cut itself, and no zipper at all on this one. My guy sews well, apparently.

Sorry for the pics quality, they are off my cell phone.

Edited to add: I put Tea Tree Oil on this for a week. We use it out here a lot. I carry a chapstick of Tea Tree Oil as well, good for quick first aid on minor cuts and scrapes for it's healing ability.
