Defensive Knives & Other Weapons Most people that carry a gun also carry a knife or other weapon as a backup. Finding a good blade is often harder than finding a good pistol or revolver.

thanks for the advice
the benchmade i carry is the utilty one for sure
its too slow opening to be a good SD knife
the gerber is very fast deploying so that would be the one to use to defend myself if it came down to it
I do rely on staying away from trouble when I can help it but sometimes theres no getting around it (walking home at night) it is then i have one hand on my pepper spray on the pocket of my coat and my other on the knife
thankfully I have never had to use either one
and while I dont do any martial arts of football or lacrosse right now I am on the track team at my school so at least I could book it out of a bad situation if I needed to

I was in your position recently. I went to a large camping store and picked up a locking caribeaner. My hand fits inside of it perfectly-there are a lot of different sizes. You can use it as a yawara stick and still be able to open your hand to grab your opponent if you have to grapple. Ask any employee and they'll point you right where they are. I still keep mine hooked to my keys-it's always with me and I have a reason to have it. Just make sure it has the locking mechanism on it.

I agree w/all the comments regarding martial arts training--esp you will learn some basics avoid fights! Carrying a knife w/o proper training can get you most seriously hurt.Sadly most people have only one edge weapon encounter and they either survive or don't..Get TRAINING from a good ma school..one thats "street" oriented and mixed--jiujitsu/muy thai/krav maga . If you must carry a knife a quick deploying folder is good. I pray you never use it. When the time comes for you to get a CCW..remember: Practice&Train Practice&Train Practice&Train and then practice and train more! Stay Safe

I have been looking around and there seems to be a good Krav Maga school nearby
I might just have to check it out

Important point...
For several years, I carried a can of OC, but had never tried it! I bought a couple of extras to give them a try. I learned some important points...
How far it will effectively spray!
How long it will spray!
And...damn, that stuff really get your attention when the blow back gets into your eyes! It doesn't take much wind to spray yourself. I would not want to try and spray someone without having tried it.
Can you still 'operate' with a little bit in YOUR eyes?
If you carry OC and have never tried using it, your missing some important 'self-training'.

i set up a roughly man sized piece of cardboard and practiced drawing it from my jacket pocket and spraying in the "face" of the card board
i dont have a big container of OC so i only drew and sprayed twice, using short bursts
the container says its good for 6-8 second long bursts
I think that must count for something right?

The krav maga website you posted seems pretty good, if your interested ask themabout a few free (2-3) introductory lessonsjust to get a 'feel' for it & see if you like it..I practiced aikido, jiujitsu, muy thai, for years (yes I'm old) before doing krav maga in my early 40's and it combined alot of my prior training...Great fun & practical --hope it works out for ya!
