Knives & Other Weapons Most people that carry concealed also carry a knife or other weapon as a backup. Finding a good blade is often harder than finding a good pistol or revolver.

Also, Gutmacher's book pg 106. For what it's worth, I rely on his interpretation rather than mine -- I'm not a lawyer.

I went to the police dept. at my university and asked if I could have a poket knife (didn't display mine incase). The chief said that students are allowed to carry pocket knives because they use them to peel fruit and such and that anything could be used as a weapon. All he said is that I cant bring some thing stupid like a sword, wave a knife around (threatningly), and it really should fit in your hand. (I should have specified if he meant closed or open). He did mention that it is up the the officers disgretion. And that they have taken away knives and given them back later.

Thanks for the update.

Strictly speaking, knives aren't allowed within 1,000 feet of school grounds unless part of a school-sanctioned event where one is required and where it is not being used in a "rude, careless, angry, or threatening manner". That's a shame too, since a knife is one of the most useful tools to keep on your person.

Damn.

I believe knives would be treated the same as a gun. If you have a CWP then you can carry within 1,000 feet of a school.

The 1,000 foot thing reminded me of another thought on this. I can't remember the last time I drove without going within 1,000 feet of a school. The odds of being stopped are obviously very low, but this almost seems like a good enough idea to justify the CWP even if you don't plan on carrying. There are other lesser reasons -- like ease of travel to the range. The law allows travel to and from the range. Not sure how it would handle stopping for lunch, shopping, etc.

That's why there's such a stink over the rule. It's awful hard to drive if you live near a school without violating the rule (if you have guns or whatever on your person or in your vehicle).

I'm going to assume it's not permitted until I can find out otherwise, though. I doubt my college will "turn me in", given how much its staff seems to ask me to borrow my knife, but better safe than sorry.

A college is not a school in Florida. You shouldn't have a problem with a common pocketknife at a Florida college. It is not considered a weapon until used as such.
