Knives & Other Weapons Most people that carry concealed also carry a knife or other weapon as a backup. Finding a good blade is often harder than finding a good pistol or revolver.

OC Spray in Canada

Can anyone tell me where I can find out if it is legal to carry OC spray in Canada?

Go to this site.

Scroll down to "Prohibited Firearms, Devices & Weapons".

It appears that pepper spray is legal to use against bears, but illegal to use against humans.

Thanks for the link. I guess it is wide open for interpretation. I will probably leave all of my methods of self defense as I travel to NY through Canada.

You can get spray for 2 purposes, dog repellent and bear defense.

I carry the dog repellent always and when we go to the park we take the bear spray. If the cop asks you why you are carrying it, always tell to defend yourself from predators and dangerous dogs. chances are the cop will know why you are really carrying it, but if you are decent looking and not making trouble they will tell you to have a nice day.

Pepper spray is illegal in Canada. I drove over to Niagara Falls and has some in the car. Was going to ditch it but forgot about it. They didn't check but the girl at the border asked if we had any firearms in the car and I said no. She then asked if we owned any firearms, I thought it was odd but I guess the Georgia tag on the car set off some extra questioning. I told her absolutely I own firearms. She then said that if I had brought them that they would hold them for me at the border and I could pick it up on the back to U.S. Other than that coming back into U.S. was a 3 minute quick and easy usual questions.

I imagine that the local law enforcement would be more understanding with a canadian citizen vs a US citizen. Would you not agree?

You can still carry your pocket knife, as long as it's a manual folder and you're not able to 'flick' it open.

Generally yes, some of our border staff are brought up to believe that Americans are trigger happy and that we need to be protected from you. Sigh......
