Defensive Knives & Other Weapons Most people that carry a gun also carry a knife or other weapon as a backup. Finding a good blade is often harder than finding a good pistol or revolver.

IMO, Euclidean covered it pretty well.

I love the CRKT Companion, I've got two of them, one of which is getting a back edge put on it. They've got a great feel and they can be found for a pretty decent price.

Spydercos are great, since you're limited to 3.5" that rules out the Endura but the delica is still a great knife (I cary one of each). The nice thing about the spydies is that they can be "ghetto-waved" so that they open on the draw.

As far as the fixed-blade v. folder thing, I'd go with the fixed blade if it's legal to do so. While some folders, especially those with a wave can be just as fast, the fixed blade is fail safe. It's never not going to open.

Just my 2-cents. :)

Oh yeah...You definately want to take advantage of the opportunity to train with SouthNarc, his stuff is great.

Some very...unusual...styles there

The Kerambit looks like it would pack a very nasty surprise in a small package.

Looks like a nice concealable....the short stubby blade looks strong.

Reminds me of the Ka-Bar knife that was reviewed here a month or two ago on "The Martialist".

Also an interesting design....how is the stability factor? Looks like it could twist in your hand or bend a couple of fingers in use?

And thanks to all for the replys to this thread I really appreciate the feedback...have received some good info here!

I have mine wrapped in parachute cord, makes it a little softer on the fingers. If you measure your fingers properly and account for the cord-wrap it is very stable.
The only way I could imagine it bending your fingers in a defensive situation is if the bad guy grabbed the blade...very unlikely (and bloody) IMO.
There are some interesting carry methods on the Hideaway knife website. I usually zip-tie it to my belt or beltloop and it just blends in.
Good luck.

The capsule (grip-opening) and blade length are designed to be proportional. There's a fancy name, and method of calculation (you'd have to ask FS), but, essentially, it means that the blade length will never have sufficient leverage to disable/injure your hand, as long as your grip is locked. Obviously, if you tried using an HAK as an anchor point on a cliff face, that might change a bit , but I personally would have other options available. To each his/her own, but I find the indexing/retention of the HAK's to be far superior to the original Perrin La Griffes and clones. The Spyderco Spot offers similar indexing, but doesn't have the inherent retention and open-hand options of the HAK.

Szabo does make some cool stuf, doesn't he :diablotin ?
