Defensive Knives & Other Weapons Most people that carry a gun also carry a knife or other weapon as a backup. Finding a good blade is often harder than finding a good pistol or revolver.

My preference swayed to Spyderco for many years for reasons which range from price to quality products from Spyderco. Nothing has changed with these reasons but after purchasing several Emerson folders my taste simply changed. First reason, thicker handle on Emerson folder and ergonomics in general fit me better then the Spyderco knifes.

When asked what do I suggest, my stock reply in regards to waved folders is both companies, Spyderco and Emerson. I let students try out the Emerson Commander drone and Spyderco Endura drone and let them decide rather than force my preferences on them.

This page on my site shows both folders in drones and live models

Thanks, hopefully showing them will allow those who can not get them altogether in one place make an educated decision on what to purchase.

Definitely. I handled some Emersons at the last gun show, but unfortunately (for me) I'm somewhat biased against liner locks - I'm a lefty. The backlock on the Spyderco is more ambi-friendly to me, so my EDC's are an Endura 4 wave and Delica 3 full serrated with a wave cut into it.

Very good point on "ambi-friendly" that to make an Emerson for left pocket carry you either need to get directions to modifiy them from Emerson (or if you are like me) or send it to them for the pocket clip to be mounted on the opposite side of the folder. When Spyderco did the multi-option for the pocket clip that was an excellent move, anyone who wants a good folder to carry in just about any pocket now has a choice.

In regards to locks, I will simply respect your opinion. For me I put my liner locks through some serious testing prior to carrying them. For example, I pretty much destroyed an Emerson Commander with a battery of test and after a day of this the knife looked like it was 10 years old. I'd rather do this then lose a finger or two.

Oh no, don't get me wrong - I trust a good solid liner lock implicitly. I find it difficult to manipulate one handed with my left thumb because it's on the "wrong" liner for me, as it is a "pull" instead of a "push" motion.

Thanks for all the info. on this thread. I've always cheaped out on knives and would get a cheapie walmart special. This was based on my assumption that I have many years martial arts and I could use those skills if I could not get to my firearm immediately.

Now I have spyderco delica 4 wave and endura 4 wave on order. I sure hope this does not get as expensive as the ole gun habit.

Questions for wave knifes and deploying the knife in general. Any good books/websites/ etc. ... for specific training?

Thanks.

Forget the "gut you like a fish" concept. The wave is the greatest thing in knives in my generation. My daily carry is an Emerson Karambit and it is just amazing coming into play. A little practice on presentation and it's just a smooth flow to open and ready.

Bought a Commander for the same features. I'm a believer in The Wave feature!

Hard to beat the Emerson Combat Karambit forward or reverse grip deployment.

The Commander is Sweeeet

Knife Fighting: A Practical Course by Michael Janich would be a fairly good place to start. Find out all you can, but remember not to get too stuck on techniques. I try to remember two things when it comes to knife carry:

1. Tactics trump technique every time.

2. If you ever start believing you can survive a knife attack without getting injured, try disarming a permanent marker from any flailing three year old without getting marked. That should bring you back to reality.

Check Shiv Works, there are a couple of videos on the homepage, and some photo tutorials in the "training" section. Also, look at the "contact weapons" forum at Total Protection interactive...Tons of great info there.
