Knives & Other Weapons Most people that carry concealed also carry a knife or other weapon as a backup. Finding a good blade is often harder than finding a good pistol or revolver.

Tactical pen

Just returned from 2 weeks in Europe. One week in France and one week in Italy. In my check in luggage I had a Swiss Champ and a Leatherman Wave.I carried on my person a Cold Steel City Stick with the pistol grip. I need a cane most of the time to walk and I had no funny looks from any TSA people. But in Germany, while changing flights I was a little nervous when the local TSA type person took a long look at the CSC Stick. As I limped his way he gave me back my stick and I was on my way. What my point is, with the CSC Stick a person can keep the bad guy a arms length and hopefully not have to get in close. Some training in its use is also a wise move. Good luck in finding a way to travel safely.

They look well made. They would come in handy in places where pocket knives aren't allowed. If I would have to use one, I would go for the face, neck, or head then run like hell.

These could work well with Kubotan techniques, and would obviously be better then the pen that you recently walked off with from your local bank.

They boast features such as "lightweight aircraft aluminum" and "fluted barrels," but does this justify the price of $70+?

...So what say you wise sages? Is this more gimmick and marketing ploys to sell a few office supplies, or a legitimate SD tool. If this seems like a useful tool, I would love to hear recommendations and why a certain model may work well over others.

Also, can anyone see any problems with TSA agents while flying, or customs agents entering/exiting borders?

Any experiences or thoughts would be very helpful.
Several members on another forum have carried similar devices while flying without any problem.

As far as whether it's a viable tool...

As you said, it will definately do a better job of stabbing/striking than the "10 for $1" Bic pens you buy at Wal-mart. Would a cheap pen work, certainly. However stabbing someone with a pencil or cheap plastic pen will probably be a one shot deal since I'm sure it would break under that kind of use (I break the stupid things just from having them in my pocket...)

A stout pen is definately a great tool to have available. I carry one regardless of whether I can carry other tools or not. Clipped to a shirt pocket, it would be very fast to get into action if you are attacked and it attracks absolutely zero attention.

If you want a cheap option, go to E-bay and search for "metal pens" and pick through the results 'till you find a good deal. A couple of months ago I got 5 of those heavy metal-bodied "drug rep" pens for like $3.

I do like the Lightfoot design that you linked to, if I was going to buy one, I think that'd be it. I guess the just boils down to whether or not you feel that there is enough benefit to this tool to justify the cost.

oh, and if you want the "Mont Blanc" of the tactical pen world, take a look at this one Hinderer Extreme

I liked the Sharkie idea myself. Though I would prefer a Highlighting marker over the black. The Hinderer extreme is a nice concept... for $240+...

I'm also intrigued by the Unbreakable Umbrella. Completely innocuous item to travel with, but perfectly capable of handing out a complete set of lumps. Plus, it keeps a good 3 foot separation from your opponent.

I have noticed that in Concealed Carry magazine myself. Another good concept.

CROSS PEN.....i have an aluminum bodied Cross that I use exclusively for travel...never gets a second look.

Also for those of you who travel with a rollbag and a computer bag, I clip mine together with a large (fits on my hand large) carabeaner clip. (The type with the screw down lock on the clip) Makes a great set of "aluminum knuckles".

Couple of thoughts: a Monte Blanc will can run $200+ and has the sole purpose of expelling ink and showing mother of pearl. A 24k gold plated Cross set is around $75, so...

I travel cross country, about 4-6 times/year and generally have something as you describe. Cross pens are really too small in diameter to be comparable; a $6 stainless Parker from Walmart is decent, but not as durable as the BM or Lightfoot.

The Sharkie is really poorly executed; I expected better. You can rub off the Charging Woodie monogram with fine sandpaper, but the marker inside is a small sharpie. Clearly, it's a small club. May fly, may not. Kind of like putting wig-wags on your Chevy Astro, unfortunately.

agreed re. the Sharkie...a regular large size (the ones that are about 6" long) Sharpie from wal-mart works just as well IMO. I also really like the little rectangle-shaped Sharpies...they feel great in the hand and "thumbcapping" is comfortable.
