Defensive Knives & Other Weapons Most people that carry a gun also carry a knife or other weapon as a backup. Finding a good blade is often harder than finding a good pistol or revolver.

Sharpen a recurve

I recently had a major brain fart, which resulted in my Benchmade D2 710's blade pretty messed up. It's an amazing, handy little knife, but unfortunately it couldn't defeat a double-strand of comm-wire.

So, what do you guys think the best way to sharpen a recurve blade is?

I am thinking something like a Crock Stick would work.

Well if its too screwed up for a steel your going to have to spend some $$ on either or both of a good diamond hone , or a set of " gunsmith " stones . In any event Ill assume you dont have the tools , and will say that the learning curve here is kinda high . If you dont have the tools , well go slow and practice before you sharpen such a fine knife . In fact sharpen a small bolt or two lol . Hey if you take a round piece of mild steel and put a paper cutting edge on it , well you learned enough to work on good kinves . There is really no shortcut imho , you either learn to work on your kinves , or you pay someone to .

Go with the Lansky sharpener set with the diamond hones! Just don't tell your wife you have it or you will be forced to sharpen all of her kitchen knives. My wife avg 3 a week she makes me sharpen!

Anything with a ROUND stick or a 1/2" hone will work fine.

The knife that I sharpened in there has a slight recurve to it, similar to the 710, and can quite literally whittle hairs. I'm hoping to get diamond rods for it in the soon future to make things go faster for a neglected blade.

Try a good quality emery paper. If you're not comfortable with just the paper in your hand, wrap it tightly around a dowell rod or broom-handle; you should be able to sharpen it quite effectively. Start with course(r) if necessary, and work your way to as fine as you want. Finish with a round crock.
Good luck.

Stay safe,

Chuck Brick.
