My official title is "IT Consultant" but what I basically do is install applications into Unix based test environments for testing purposes in addition to installations of the finalized version of the applications into the production environment after they are ready to go live.
My actual degree is in Computer Information Systems but I've done everything from working for Internet Providers to maintaining Hospital IT networks before I started my current focus which I've been doing for the last 7 years. I enjoy it because I get to work with a lot of people & especially because I primarily work from my home office so my typical commute consists of walking from my bedroom to my home office in my pajama's for the early morning work with software developers in India, the UK, Australia, & Florida after which I go ahead & eat breakfast, take my shower & change into my street clothes before I continue the rest of my day working primarily with folks in Arizona, Colorado, & California. My work hours are rather nice because it allows me to spend a lot of time with my kids - I am often done working by 4 or 5 pm which coincides well with when they get home from school - especially since I don't get stuck in traffic. A few times a week I have to work in the early evenings but I'm able to wait until my children are in bed. That allows me to spend 4 to 5 hrs each evening with my children on week days which is very nice.

I cannot believe I just read every single post. I need a life.
I am trained as a paralegal. You know what that wording means - I'm doing something else. No market around here for paralegals, so I'm doing what I've been doing for several years - manager at McDonald's. I was beginning to think I was the only one. Quote:

I am a millwright(industrial mechanic). I work at a facility that turns coal into coke that is used in the steel making process. I work at a beautiful place called Zug Island in the sparkling Detroit River. I am required by OSHA to shower at the end of every shift and CANNOT bring home any outer clothing worn during my normal workday for fear of contaminating my family. We wear respirators in most areas of the plant and carbon monoxide is a constant danger along with many other hazards too long to list. Unbelievably we are a relativly safe operation due to constant safety training and what I like to believe is the hiring of only qualified and sensible people. I consider myself lucky being in the heart of the auto industry and working in an industry that still can function with auto downsizing. We will always need steel, and the gas we produce from cooking the coal is used to power some of the electric power plant next door. In the 70s or 80s, Zug Island was in the Guinness Book for the dirtiest square mile.
But, it pays the bills. |

Cool. My wife taught for 35 years. I always wondered why she didn't get combat pay. AFS

Utilitiy Locator. I locate lines for SBC/ AT&T and ONG (Oklahoma Natural Gas). It's a horrible and often a stressfull job. It amazes me that these companys don't know where their own lines are and that they call me and say "Whats buried over here on 5th street? Cause we just cut it." It really is a crazy job sometimes. At times I work 18 hour days, 7 days a week. But, today; I slept in my truck for 4 hours.
