Missouri: Looking at Missouri

So in another thread I commented that I am looking at moving to Missouri.

The rub with Missouri as it relates to handguns and CHP is this:

You need a permit from the local sheriff to buy a handgun. You have to be a resident for 6 months before you can even ask mother may I. That permit costs $10 and expires 30 days after issued. The sheriff can take 9 calendar days to issue it. Kind of eliminates any impulse buys doesn\'t it.

For CHP Missouri recognizes my Virginia permit which is good until 2007. So the 6 month waiting period there isn\'t a problem. Although my VA resident permit may not be valid once I get a Missouri driver\'s license. So that is a question.

It also looks like you will invest almost $300 in getting a 3 year permit. Just general research is $100 for the permit, $125 for a state certified class, $20 for a new driver\'s license, and time off work for two trips to see the sheriff and one trip to the DMV. Kansas City and St. Louis aren\'t required to issue and someone mentioned that Jackson County isn\'t issuing? Maybe an out of state is the best. Florida or Utah maybe?

Commments from those of you who live there? Is the reality on the ground different from what the statutes say?

It is a bit different. It takes no more than 45 days to get your CCW permit. Most counties will process than in much less time. Also the Permit to Aquire and concealable handgun (or PTA) does cost $10 and generally it takes much less than 9 days. In my county it takes about 3 days, in Clay county and many others, it takes 10 minutes. Also there are cheaper options for a CCW permit. You could go the Utah route that is $65 (i believe) plus the cost of training. Or when you move here you could take a free Hunters Education course put on by the Missouri Department of Conservation and use that as the training for a Florida permit. ($115)

You will find all the info that you need at www.missouricarry.com. There is a forum there with a ton of very educated people.

In a nutshell: STAY OUT OF THE CITIES!!!!!!!!!!!!!

The \"rural\" counties (even 5 miles out of city limits) are much more gun friendly. Most Permit to Acquire\'s take about 20 minutes, and are simpler to do the CCW applications.

I agree wit Momike, stay out of the cities. I live in St.Louis Co. on the edge of the city of St. Louis and I can tell you they are deffinetly anti-CCW. If at all possible stay in the rural areas.

It depends on the job location of course, but I\'m looking up near KCI. I think that is Clay County? It is not Jackson County. I\'m a rural kind of guy. Where I live now is considered \"farm country\" for this area. I would like nothing better than to find 10-15+ acres to live on.

I guess the permit to purchase is just an annoying thing. We just eliminated the handgun of the month club here in Virginia last year. Just seems inconvenient that if I find two handguns at a show and I only have one permisison slip, I can only get one or try to get another permission slip. I really don\'t have the money to have to worry about it most of the time, but maybe one day the planets will align. ;)

How does hunting work in Missouri? I know when I lived in Iowa in my area it was all shotgun only. Out here we can use everything except little calibers.

Welcome to Missouri :)

I\'m in Clay Co myself. Our sheriff isn\'t exactly pro-carry, but he has come around to follow the law, if a little late. We tried, and failed, to get a more gun-frendly sheriff elected in November. Oh well, we\'ll get it done next time.

I get a PTA (Permit to Aquire) in about 20 minutes. In fact I\'m headed up there right now... need to pick up a new wheel gun today! You do have to appear in person at the sheriff\'s office. It\'s a pain, for sure. There\'s some legal-eagles looking at making MO CCW holders exempt from the PTA\'s, but no telling if or when they\'ll get it done.

I\'m no longer a hunter, but it\'s not shotgun only. They do have minimum caliber laws for some game, and magazine capacity rules, as well.

Clay Co has lots of open country left, but it\'s disappearing in a hurry. If you\'re going to work in Kansas City, I\'d say Clay Co is your best bet.

Thanks for the info..

We aren\'t in MO yet, but the plan is around July/August if everything goes right. The actual location could shift based on employment etc.

I\'m thinking north side by KCI because I\'ll likely have a job where I travel some and being closer to the airport is ok with me. I have lived off the end of the runway at Dulles when the Concorde flew in and out, so airplane noise isn\'t a problem for me. Now skidding the wheels on my roof is another matter. ;)

I\'ll poke around on the MO DGIF website and figure out the hunting regs. I lived in Iowa years ago and it was shotgun only. Minnesota is shotgun only in the southern part of the state as well. So I wasn\'t sure if that was something Missouri did or not.
