So you can carry in the schools?

Sorry, Doc. I've said this before....the Educators are the folks in the primary and secondary school trenches that get treated like crap everyday by students, parents and administrators and STILL manage to battle through and actually TEACH! Kudos to you though for being one of the few, the proud pro-gun College Level Profs in the entire system! Are your "peers" aware of this odd proclivity of yours?

My "peers" in my inner city public high school know by now.....don't start a 2nd Amendment debate with yours truly....'cuz I'll show up loaded fer bear. Everytime I get published on this topic in the Miami Herald (I average about 4-6 times a year) the whispered word around the sign in sheets goes like this:

Q: HAVE YOU SEEN THIS? He's at it again! He's a menace!
A: Shhhhhhhh! You'll only encourage him!

I had one trembling liberal stick out his lower lip in the teachers lunchroom once and in a quavering voice inquire as to whether or not I was a member of a MILITIA?

Imagine his surprise when I responded: No. But not because I disagree in the activities they practice. It's just that they can't TEACH me anything new! Why run around in the heat when you can't learn anything? LOL It was worth getting up that day to see that wus basically run screaming from the room.

Doc...I'm not disparaging your line of work, but face it: The students in your classroom want to be there and have paid to be there. You have no issues like gang activity, or kids who blow up with raging hormones and suppressed rage over your authority. I get that all the time. Teachers at my school have been mugged for money. Carjacked in the teacher's lot and attacked because they strive to maintain order and civility in the classroom. Last year, we lost two who simply quit and walked out of the building. Of course, one of those had been flattened by a female gangsta moments before.....

Now, OTOH, if you DO face this....welcome to the club! Welcome to the board in any case. What's your carry flavor?

You qualify by marriage. You get to see the STRESS and frustration your wife deals with on a daily basis and because you also deal with the age group (generally) you can help her. That's awesome!

I'm a social studies teacher in the inner city and been there (between 2 schools) for the past 12 out an entire 18 years of teaching. The rest of the time I spent in "nicer" areas teaching middle school.

My opinion of 7th and 8th graders is that they ought to be staked to a chain in the back yard 24/7 and fed RAW MEAT until they become seniors and thus re-enter the human race. I have a special place in my heart for teachers in the middle schools. I did it and I hated it!

I married an English Teacher who has as of this upcoming school year: 32 years in the system. She's at a much (ahem) "nicer" school, but her kids can be bozos just the same! When she takes her full retirement in 3 years, hopefully we'll have worked our financial package to allow me to retire EARLY and simply enjoy life.

Educators in Primary/Secondary Schools

Thanks for including me as an "in-law" (i.e., married to a secondary teacher). But I'm also a mustang; my first ten years in the classroom (now 32) were in junior high and high school.

You are right about the lack of respect/support from students, parents, administrators, and sometimes other teachers. But just because students "pay" for their classes at the university doesn't mean they want to be there or that the levels of respect/support from the above groups are greater.

My peers are aware of my vocal support for the entire constitution (Years ago before entering the classroom, I swore an oath to protect and defend its contents), but "concealed" in Texas means hidden in all aspects. I do, however, have colleagues in other departments who carry and who know I do. We meet and address the problems of the world in the weight room and at IDPA or IPSC events.

University campuses, like the public schools, are not the safest places. And yes, we also see various forms of "raging hormones and suppressed rage." That being said, you are correct in noting key differences.

When I can carry, it's either a plain Kimber Custom II in .45 or a Para P-16.

Stay safe and watch your six.

Hey I thought you were always a college Prof. My bad! Anybody who has taught at any level of the public schools, even as a part time substitute qualifies for full membership. Your records have been noted and your status modified. Welcome Brother!

I'm also a published author with a literary agent. One of the most infuriating things about being married to an English teacher whose experience in the classroom spans 32 years is her compulsion to correct my grammar, syntax, spelling and everything when I read or write.

Thankfully that's not a whole lot of corrections to be made. But most scripts are written in the colloquial so it becomes maddening. But I love her to pieces....so I usually rise above the crisis. Do you guys do that? Correct each other?

Spousal Corrections

We frequently share our written works, but because we write for very different audiences, we don't generally read as editors. On the rare occasion we do have questions, we generally spend more time discussing concepts. Neither of us have literary desires; both of us, however, write for professional presentations and journals.
