between the a and the t. Never end a sentence with a preposition! The correct question would be "Where are you at, Alabama?"

I don't want to be the grammar police, but there is no rule in English that says a sentence cannot end in a preposition. There is a rule in Latin that says that, but not English. Besides, the word that is usually a preposition is an adverb when it comes at the end of a sentence. So even if there were a rule in English that no sentence could end in a preposition it could never be violated because the word would not be a preposition.

My favorite story concerning this is from Winston Churchill.
Quote:
Winston Churchill's witticism about the absurdity of this bugaboo should have laid it to rest. When someone once upbraided him for ending a sentence with a preposition, he rejoined, "That is the type of arrant pedantry up with which I shall not put."
A Dictionary of Modern American Usage by Bryan A Garner. Oxford University Press, New York, NY, 1998, p. 519. This is one of my favorite books. It lays to rest all sorts of language legends and grammar old wives' tales. It is fun to find out the how and why of our language.

I will add that the "at" is unnecessary. The question would be just as clear if written: "Alabama, where are you?" Of course some wag will respond, "Somewhere between Mississippi, Georgia, Tennessee, and Florida." Although to be perfectly correct the Gulf of Mexico should be added to the list.

Just so as to not be accused of hijacking the thread - I live in Perry County.
