It's also worth pointing out that the entire state is NOT like Miami. (Not that there's anything wrong with Miami--that's just a common misconception). I'm sure you'll be able to find something you like.

I was born and raised in Miami, FL. Trust me when I say it's changed dramatically! We're looking to move as soon as my wife gets her full retirement from the school system in three years. If her dad (now 85) is still around, we'll probably move near him in the north center of the state. Other wise we're headed to Asheville, NC or possibly further north along the western border of NC. But probably Asheville because it has a very good VA Hospital.

Enjoy your freedoms their in the States, here we are allowed only 2 handguns and 1 rifle and none of the same caliber ( if you want to be legal ) you must also obtain a permit to transfer your firearm from your home to the gun range and the permit is only good for 1 day. Also you must be a citizen, pee in a bottle, see a shrink, take a gun handling class, and on and on, just to get a permit to own a firearm, then once you've bought one then you can expect to wait up to 1 month before taking you new toy home with you. Anyway take care my friends, and I'll be seeing you soon I hope.

Sorry to have to tell you, everything can be speeded up with a bribe. That's what makes things work in The Philippines. I'm told it is actually a rather efficient way of getting things done. When things don't go right here, my wife laments that we aren't there, where a few dollars can make stuff happen. Maybe things have changed recently, though somehow I doubt it.

As for the gun stuff, I guess things have changed since my wife left there in 1970. My father in-law used his gun liberally, to keep suitors from his daughters, to force a doctor to do needed surgery, to protect his land rights, and to bring some scum to justice.

Different times.

When I was newly married my wife asked me to get a gun for the house. I said, "say what?" She replied, "tata always had one."

I think P95 might be right about PA, though it isn't the weather that you are looking for.

Hopyard, Yes graft is still alive and well here, also "who you know " helps. My wife works for a VERY prominent attorney here and he has helped me out alot as in that I don't have to wait in lines here for anything, he just has to make a phone call and I'm in ! IMHO the Philippines is a great place to visit but for this American it is not a place for me to live. I told my wife that firearms and shooting are a passion of mine, and if I can't do them then we will move back to the States, not to mention my holster making, I have discovered that I will have to order my supplies either from the U.S. or Austrailia as the supplies they have here in P.I. are substandard and shipping costs are very high and then you run the risk of Customs taking your purchase and not giving it to you.

We average about 1 freezing and 1 hot week a year, but some years are exceptions (we had a week over 110 a couple years ago - peeked at 118. Was opening weekend of dove season, I was hiking with a shotgun at 114)

If you stay out of central meto areas, nice homes start arround $60-80 sq/ft in the burbs near me, a little less elsewhere. Right now it is hard to find rural land less than $3k an acre, but $5k-$10k/acre) on 100 acre plots is more the norm. 20 acre ranchettes are way too common
Shhhhh! What the heck, isn't it bad enough that half of the state of California is trying to move here, why let anyone else in on the secret that this is the best place in the States to live?!?

There's no reason to move to Texas. Don't let the lack of a state income tax, nor the fact that it is a very gun-friendly state (you can now carry at work or in your car without a CHL), or our outstanding weather fool you, it isn't as nice as everyone says it is. It's more like this...

Cheers! M2

I don't usually wear sock with sandals here. For that matter I have about given up sandals and mostly wear Crocs now. I do occasionally wear socks with Crocs, but not when wearing shorts.

Seriously, if you decide to consider Alabama Kay Beckett will be a great asset to your search. She and I grew up together somewhat. She would come visit her grandparents in the summer (at ages 5 to about 9) and her grandmother would always invite my sister and me to spend time on the farm while Kay was visiting. Kay moved to Marion about a week before my wife and I did. We have enjoyed having her for a neighbor for these past 12 years.

By the way people who live in Perry County live exceptionally long lives. My neighbor on the other side will be 103 next month. Her older sister died two years ago at 104. Among the less than 4000 people in our little town I know at least 6 people over 90. It must be the water.

Northwest Florida, just don't live by the Gulf and the cost of living isn't too bad. I just left PanamaCity a year ago and the cost-of-living wasn't bad. If I had a choice where to live it would be Crestview, Fl. next to Eglin AFB (Ft. Walton). Florida is a very gun friendly state!
