I concur with most of the plusses - the weather, gun friendly....

Where I live, in western Colorado, we have a state income tax. Property taxes on a $300,000 house are about $650 per year. My brother in law has a house north of Dallas and pays over $8700 per year on a similar property.

I won't be paying state income taxes - not much, anyway, when I retire. I will be paying property taxes as long as I live.

Another Florida Endorsement Here...

North Central Florida...
No hurricanes...
Very little crime (Gainesville area)...I said little...still some dirtbags here too...Gainesville was noted as the 'safest' mini metro areas out of 40 compared in the U.S.
College town atmosphere, multi-cultural activities...plays, etc.
Shands Hospital network...pretty good medical care...

Housing is expensive, but one can do flips and survive pretty well. We've done that three times in the last 7 years...

Great weather...NO SNOW...

Great gun laws...one of the best in the nation...OMO...The Gunshine State

Enjoy your freedoms their in the States, here we are allowed only 2 handguns and 1 rifle and none of the same caliber ( if you want to be legal ) you must also obtain a permit to transfer your firearm from your home to the gun range and the permit is only good for 1 day. Also you must be a citizen, pee in a bottle, see a shrink, take a gun handling class, and on and on, just to get a permit to own a firearm, then once you've bought one then you can expect to wait up to 1 month before taking you new toy home with you. Anyway take care my friends, and I'll be seeing you soon I hope.

So I guess I'm the only person that finds Florida almost impossible to make a decent living in. Wages are low, real estate is outrageous, and though there is no state personal income tax, the cost of living here is still high. Just my two cents.

Depends on what you do and what part of the state you're in! I've lived in 8 different states and one overseas territory so far. Florida is a fair compromise for me so far. I make a decent living and find the cost of living average. I really have no interest in buying property so that may factor in for me as well. I've certainly lived in lots worse situations and places!

Montana sucks! Now go tell everybody so they stay away! On a serious note, Virginia might meet your needs.

Pro2A, Exactly, you don't know how well you have it until it's gone. I have come to appeciate the U.S. customs and laws ( and yes even CA ) more since I've been here in the Philippines.
Thanks,
Rhome

Here's my list, in no particular order:

TX
AZ
TN
KY
SC
NC

That's just my list. Others may have other preferences. There is good and bad about each choice, just like there are differences within each state too.

My part of the state, Lake Okeechobee area is about

The land is still cheap and the taxes are reasonable.
