I have been a pastor for 9 years now, and just this year have decided to begin to carry. I won't be carrying in the pulpit, but I do from time to time. In our church, we actually have several men assigned to safety that carry and watch Pastor's back.

We are very much involved with fund raising and logistical support for Wycliffe and I provide hardware and software support for them on occasion.

I'm new to this forum, as I have just now completed CCW training and am awaiting the permit from my local sheriff.

I've been a professing Christian most of my life. I believe in going the extra mile and everything that Christ preached. But I also believe that it is our God-given right - even duty - to defend those we love.

I honestly believe that Christians who are serious about Christ's teaching might very well make the best type of person to carry concealed. 99.9 % of those who are licensed to carry concealed - regardless of religious affiliation - are honest, responsible, law-abiding citizens. But in all candor, I've met a couple of kooks who carry concealed, also.

An earnest Christian is less likely to get drunk or let his or her anger or ego make them do something stupid. I'm not saying it couldn't happen, because Christians are human, too. I'm just saying that if they're livin' by The Book, they're more likely to turn the other cheek on stupid arguments over parking spaces and the like. Christians will hopefully be less likely to shoot an unarmed person for breaking into an empty car (as unfortuantely happened in Cincinnati with a CCW permit holder recetnely).

I also think that Christians are more aware that evil does exist in the world. Secular humanists tend to see crime as a social disease, and if we just get rid of whatever is causing the crime (like guns), then the world would be a happy place. Whatever. But Christians are acutely aware that if you could somehow destroy every gun in the world, evil people would turn to mugging and raping at the point of a sword. So while we seek to turn people toward The Light, we also must acknowledge that there are twisted thugs out there who will only respect force.

Christ taught a lot about love and forgiveness. But he also made himself a whip and kicked some money-changer butt in the Temple.

p8riot, my wife and I are not directly involved with Wycliffe, but we have been supporting a Wycliffe missionary since 1990 when she came to the church I pastored in Metairie, LA. After we moved back to Alabama we were able to get her supported by our local church where we serve as worship leader and accompaniest. Wycliffe does a great job.

My parents are involved with Couriers for Christ. It's a small shipping/distribution ministry. I grew up all over the country.

They work with over 17 languages and many more countries. They get in touch with printers, translators, and the like to get the Bible into any language needed. Then they handle all of the shipping, customs and most of the distribution for local missionaries in the countries in need.

They also do large campaigns. They go to Europe, scout out a place, a time, helpers, ship the Bibles and then do MASSIVE distribution and hold HUGE meetings for about 3-4 weeks. I've been involved in at several myself.

My Dad actually just got back from Poland and Tajikistan. Tajikistan being the location of their next campaign.

The Call

I was licensed by the Pastor of my church in 1991 after going to Southern Marin Bible Institute. I did cell Ministry for 5 years at San Quentin and brought Overcommers Outreach there. You see after Vietnam I was a doper for 15 years. Then the Lord got ahold of me and Ive been clean 23 years now. When 9/11 happened I fell away from the church.I went back into Combat mode. Bought my first gun since 1976. I also checked back with the Vet center. I suppose a bit of PTSD got me. I trained ,went to classes got my CCW in Nevada,Utah, and Florida. Became NRA life member. But could not find my way back into fellowship again. My pastor can not understand the defensive mode I am in.I guess you can say I am in the wilderness now .I pray the Lord will keep me and guide me and send an angel to minister to this brokenness. When I read that there are other Christians that own and carry it is comforting. Here in liberal land I am a bit of a freak stating I love the Lord and own and carry guns. But after reading the post tonight perhaps I will get some encouragement and prayer and fellowship. God bless all of you for taking the time to read my rant. In Jesus Christ Billy 101st Airborne RVN 68-69

George,

With all due respect, this is close to crossing the line. Please caution members to keep on the thread.

I would much prefer to let this stay where it is, but since you asked I feel that I owe you the courtesy of a reply. George's post asked what preachers carry and what caused them to decide to carry. I was intrigued by the thread when I saw it, and, as a non-Christian, found the follow up posts to be very interesting and informative.

However, the line about Christ making himself a whip and kicking some money changer butt in the Temple is, IMO, indelicate and could be viewed as offensive. The "money changer" reference is, of course, to Jews in the Temple, and I felt that it was off topic, derogatory, albeit perhaps not intentional, and therefore inappropriate for this Forum.

Now, with that said, I admit that I might have been overly sensitive to the comment, and, on hindsight, perhaps should have just let it pass. So, that's it. No big deal on my part. Hope that we are still friends.

It wasn't about race - it was about how people (any people) were treating the temple of God. A picture of how we should treat our bodies as temples of God and how we should repect places of worship -
