Thanks to everyone who has posted in the last few weeks. It is good for us to share our positions and to hear the arguments and defenses of those positions. It is also good for us to know that there are others out there like us. I'm always glad when I see that there is a new post here. Keep up the good work.

Not a Christian myself (strictly atheistic, blame it on my Swedish heritage and our school) however I'm still going to give this one a friendly bump

Wow! I can't believe I haven't come across this thread before. Thanks for the bumps.

I've really enjoyed seeing the biblical perspective on self-defense here. I don't carry yet, mostly for monetary reasons, but also because my wife isn't comfortable with handguns. Long guns she's ok with, but the few times we've talked about it, she seems vigorously opposed to having a handgun in the house. Mostly because of safety concerns, but partly because of the violent nature they have been branded with and the notion that Christians should be peaceful people. The problem is, I argue logically, and her opposition is completely emotional! ("I just don't like them.")

As her husband, I want to respect her wishes, but at the same time provide for our safety. Any thoughts?

Sorry, Mnemonic, I doubt there is a single husband on this forum who can relate. ALL of OUR wives respond to logic without any problems whatsoever.

Seriously, no matter how logical and rational we may claim to be, there are really very few of us who really operate out of logic. We are emotional creatures. Men/husbands may, often do, claim it is emotion that rules our decisions. But, that is often a front.

So, appeal to her emotions. What about safeguarding your family's life/lives? What about those situations when people need to defend themselves? Tell/show her those stories. Point out what has happened in your locality, where someone has defended themselves successfully, or where they did not defend themselves and the results were not pretty.

Manipulative? I don't think so. If a story moves you, it will move her. One of the reasons most of us have chosen to defend ourselves, our families and our principles is because we have been moved by what happens if we don't, or we have been moved by someone who chose to defend themselves.

My $00.02.

I hate to say it because this will maybe force you to lie () if she asks you but I suggest you should buy one and then hide it at a good place where she will never look. She will thank you the day you need it.

Neat thread and very cool to see how civil it has been. Other gun boards I've visited can have some pretty aggressive and nasty folks when you start talking religion.
I am a Christ Servant Minister and Worship leader (one of six) at our church. I have substituted for the pastor only once so far but I do get to run the Men's study and hold (along with the lovely Mrs. 9mmMike) a Small Group study at our home twice a month.
And yes I do carry all the time, including while at church.
Very cool thread!
Mike

I am primarily Wiccan. I grew up with the Chumash religion in So. CA.

I worked with a man, who's family was very into their church. One Sunday 5 armed men entered the church and began threatening the parishioners.

Juan and his 3 brothers were sitting in the middle of the church, all in isle seats. Very quickly, the 5 losers "met" the primary instructors of the Flores Brothers Kempo Studio... They didn't last long.

He, and his brothers were firm believers in Psalms 144:1
"Blessed be the Lord my strength, who teacheth my hands to war, and my fingers to fight

My favorite was always "Praise the Lord, and pass the ammunition"

Once again I'm a seminary student and I carry. My dad is a pastor, and has started talking about acquiring a pistol for home defense. I doubt I could ever convince him to carry, but it's a start! He wants something my mom could shoot too. I was thinking a full size 9mm--something with some weight to reduce the felt recoil. If anybody's got a recommendation (in the $500 or less bracket) PM me with it, so as not to derail the thread.

How about a CZ75? They're ultra reliable, very accurate and steel framed. (And priced below the $500 mark new.)

Wow I can't believe I'm so late to this thread! Another poor sinner saved by the shed blood of Christ Jesus, here. I first encountered HIM in a private group of church based Sea Scouts and accepted him in the 7th grade. But I don't REALLY count that, as I just wasn't prepared to accept the nature of my committment.

That was finally done when I left active duty in 1984. I have always believed in the right of self defense and of the christian duty to serve in the military. I felt this to be codified when I read the story of the terrorist attack in South Africa where the church goer returned fire with a 38 snub nose. That book is called Shooting Back and I highly recommend it. It's available at WorldNetDaily DOT COM.

These days I carry IWB in Church and one of the Elders in my church is also a member of my IDPA Club and HE carries a 1911 IWB at the same service with full knowledge and approval of the Pastor and Council of Elders.

I gave my copy to my old Pastor who now has his own radio show: Steve Brown of KeyLife Network. He loved it, too. He told me that our branch of Presbyterianism, called PCA for Presbyterian Chuch in America originally split from the larger and more LIBERAL Pres Church USA who believe in ordaining gays and getting involved politically in leftist causes. The core issue that caused the schism and subsequent split for our splinter group was the PC-USA's desire to push a gun control agenda in the late 1960's. That made me feel pretty good. We are more fundamentalist and evangelical in our Biblical viewpoints, while most of our political viewpoints lean heavily to the RIGHT..

Let me be clear: Any Jihadi lurching into our Sanctuary and screaming ALLAH U AKBAR prior to launching a terror attack is probably going to be riddled with lead before he/they have much chance to damage God's little lambs. The Sheepdogs are on duty!
