Newbie from Georgia
Hello all,
I'm new to the forum and will be new to concealed carry very shortly. Hoping this site and it's members can help me make some wise decisions about what to carry, how to carry it, and when. I'm a Defensively Strong, Pro Military, Conservative Libertarian father of two gorgeous children that never got into guns too much due to my mother. My Dad was a lifetime member of the NRA, had guns safely stowed all over the house, retired Navy guy that was an expert marksmen on pistol and rifle. If you've got time, I'd like to post an email that I composed the other day due to an incident that happened which will explain my desire to begin carrying: Approximately 7:15 Monday night, I'm heading North on Abercorn turning right onto 34th street to pick up Zoe from Choir Practice. I pull in and parallel park on the south side of the street adjacent to the church. As I pull in I notice a young woman walking to her car from an office a few blocks down the other way on 34th. I've noticed her ... Read More before and always worry about her walking alone in this section of town. About the time she gets to her car parked on the east side of Lincoln from where we are, I notice a late 20s to early 30s dark skinned African American male approximately 6'-2" about 190 -210lbs with medium length teased out hair wearing a white t-shirt running/walking through the church yard next to me. I'm thinking that he's running to catch up to the girl that walked by, possibly knows her, or has other intentions. I'm staring him down as he passes me and he's looking right back at me in my open Jeep. As he gets about 1 car length ahead of me, he steps out behind the car that is ahead of him and reaches into his pants, pulls out a gun. He fires over the top of the car at two African American males of the same age range that are walking North on Lincoln. 4 shots are fired, I'm not sure it they're all from his gun or if they return fire, but the caliber sounds the same on all 4 shots. He then ... Read Moreturns back around stashing his gun and is looking straight at me as he passes and runs back south/westerly towards Abercorn and the front of the church. As he's running back and looking at me I duck as much as I can to reduce my chances of being shot and leave the parking spot in my Jeep as quickly as possible. I then begin to circle the blocks and call 911 and relay as much as I could to the man on the phone. I circled about 5 times looking for a police officer to relay some kind of direction of any of the individuals involved and to keep moving should any of them decide to come back. Once I've determined that the police are on site enough and that it's safe to come back, I immediately park and come upstairs to make sure that none of the children come out of the building until their parents are there and speak to Mr. Moss. I escort some of the women and their children to their cars and take Zoe and leave. Anyways, just some of my thoughts. If anyone's from Georgia or in Savannah proper, drop me a note. Meech |

Welcome from IA, while I'm not in GA, my brother is and works in Savannah, one of the reasons he moved "out to the country" was what you just described. No place for kids.
You've found a good forum, lots of knowledgeable folks around that will help you out. Currently my brother carries a Sig 220 in a shoulder holster, but due to the heat he's looking for something smaller and lighter with more capacity, I suggested he look into a Glock 30SF. I will suggest that you find a range that rents guns and try and shoot as many as you can be fore deciding on a make/model to purchase. Welcome to DC. ![]() |

Welcome from The Bluegrass State. Glad to have another Jacksonian Southerner with us. Also delighted that you & yours are intact. As for a handgun selection, there are very, very few SD circumstances than can't be tilted in your favor with a GLOCK G19, a quality 1911 and/or a J-frame S&W. But remember - the only reason to have a handgun...is to fight your way to your rifle or shotgun! There's a great bunch of folks here. You're gonna' enjoy it.

thanks
thanks to all so far.
JD, I've been looking into durability, reliability, compactness while still being a decent caliber, and fit for my hand. I'm 6'2" and have a fairly decent sized hand, but think that the G27 might be the one for me. I've still got some research and looking to do though. |
