what I will tell you is don't listen to anyone about what gun you should have. Guns are like shoes. would you let anybody(especially a guy) buy you shoes?
I thought what your Dad did about 9mm's.
Then one day my little girl of 14 years , standing 5 feet tall and 100 pounds soaking wet grabbed my 1911 at the range.
On the tip of my tongue was it's too big. A magazine later there was this incredible smile and she just looked at me and said "WOW"
She's now 28 still 5 feet tall, 8 months pregnant and still carries a 1911.
So try out a whole lot of guns. I've never seen anybody at the range refuse to let a girl try their gun. All you will hear is "get mine, it's the best".
Find out for yourself.

I think I would get disowned if my dad caught me carrying anything other than a Glock. *Laughs*
At the range my dad took me to, they let you rent guns to shoot so when I start looking to actually buy, I'll probably go there and check out some different makes and models althought (From what I have seen) I am pretty fond of the simplicity of the Glocks.
I've shot my dad's... Uh... I can't remember if it was the G19 or the G17 and I have shot his G22 and although the 22 felt like a cannon in my hand (Hey, what can I say? I'm weak...) I liked the feel of it. If I had to choose I would probably go with the more compact but not microscopic 19 because it doesn't have the recoil of the 22 but I can't really say until I can actually start shopping around. Three years is a long time so between now and then I might find I like your 1911 better.
BTW, I like your example about the shoes. *Laugh* I made that mistake once so... I can understand your point.

Hey! A fellow Tennessee-an. What part ya from, if I may ask...?

(And, again, thank you all for the warm welcome.)

Welcome DeMeshia from another 1911 man. My daughter is also of the mind that 1911's are the way, but I might have had something to do with that. She shoots mine almost as well as I do, I just practice more is the only reason. If she got serious about it, she would be as good if not better. Me, Proud, nah. LOL She carries a Springfield Armory Micro Compact in .45 or her Kel-Tec P11. Enjoy the show here, it's quite fun and informative.
