Actually a gun must be unloaded in a car not unless you have a permit. That is the one big draw back if you do not have a permit. I dunno about Oregon

Well...yeah, but:

I'm in Washington State, where there is no legal provision for nor against open carry (--> it's not illegal --> it's legal). I've never seen another person open carry save the local PD, and that's just in August (the only real summer month here =P).

Come to think of it, I was talking with a UWPD officer the other day and, while we were talking, another student came up to the cruiser and said " Hey officer xxx, is it legal to carry a pistol out in the open? Cause I just saw a guy down at xxx (bubble tea hang-out place) and he had a handgun." He explained further that there was no badge, and that the guy was making no effort to conceal at all.

I told him that there's no legal provision for open carry, so it's perfectly legal to do so. The officer shrugged and told the worried student that's right. He then suggested that a liquor enforcement agent might be open-carrying, but I dunno whether that's relevant at all.

That's the only time I've even heard of someone open carrying around here. Like many other people have said, most people find few situations when they feel they should open carry. But if it's something you want to do, I think you should go for it.

Outside of Seattle it is not as uncommon as you seem to think

Michigan is a traditional open carry state. Open carry is more common in rural areas. You may NOT open carry in a car without a permit. However, Michigan recognizes the resident permits of all 50 states.

I OC for the most part. I CC when I'm at my other job at the request of my employer. When I'm off his clock, I generally OC. Winter I mostly CC due to dress habits.

Do you have a link to your post about why you OC? It is one of the best if not the best arguement for OC I have ever read

I live in Louisiana which is an open carry state, but very rarely see anyone open carry. I conceal because I like the element of surprise. About the only time I open carry is when we go to the gun show and then it has to be unloaded. I guess I wouldn't have a problem open carrying by myself, but when my wife and kids are around I don't want to draw undue attention and put them in the middle of a big anti-gun hissy fit. Around here, if the weapon cannot be easily seen as a gun it's concealed. I chose not to take the chance. If I were to open carry while wearing a long shirt and the shirt would happen to fall over my weapon without my knowledge. Could be trouble, so I got me a concealed handgun permit. I cover it up and it's good to go. I wouldn't mind open carry, but I don't feel like making the statement EVERYWHERE I go.

I OCed about 10-15% of the time before I got my CCP, but I had a few people who were not comfortable with it ask me to leave a business or public place. I don't want to draw that much attention to myself so I would leave. Not worth fighting with them about it.

I live in Ohio, we are an OC state. I have not seen anyone other than LEO or the staff at a one of the gun shops OC'ing. I have had my CHL for a month, and twice now I OC'ed just for the heck of it. Once I took my son around the neighborhood to ride his scooter and had it open, then we went into the gas station and I never covered up. The next time was at a McDonalds. I tend to do the "Buckeye Tuck" in the car, tucking my shirt behind my IWB gun, I forgot to untuck the shirt and did not realize it until I got in the car and went to retuck.

Both times I had no problems. I do not think I would go through the mall OC'ing, but that is another story.
