US pastor welcomes handgun owners to church event
By DYLAN T. LOVAN (Associated Press Writer)
From Associated Press
June 04, 2009 1:31 PM EDT
LOUISVILLE, Kentucky - A Kentucky pastor is inviting people to bring their guns to church to celebrate America's Independence Day and the constitutional right to bear arms.

New Bethel Church is welcoming "responsible handgun owners" to wear their firearms inside the church on June 27, the Saturday that precedes the Fourth of July holiday. An ad says there will be a handgun raffle, patriotic music and information on gun safety.

Church pastor Ken Pagano says guns must be unloaded and private security will check visitors. He says recent church shootings make it necessary to promote safe gun ownership.

Marian McClure Taylor is executive director of the Kentucky Council of Churches. She says churches work to prevent violent harm and promote peace, but most "allow for arms to be taken up under certain conditions."
I have relatives in Ky, sounds like a good time for a visit.

I don't get it. What's the difference between no gun and an unloaded gun?

Hi EdC,
As our pathetic new leader would say... “It’s a step in the right direction.”

I don't think this is a good idea at all. They are advertiing that there will be a lot of unloaded weapons in one place on July 4th at a certain time. Seems like some bad guys that would like to get some weapons would love to have that info.
I am not against guns in church, but this is not the way to do it.

"and private security will check visitors"
Just another publicity stunt. He is paying for armed guards, but forcing law abiding citizens to unload. This guy is not doing the gun community any favors.

Sound like a perfect "gun-free zone" to me...a perfect place to steal a lot of guns.

I agree. What point do unloaded guns make? When I was a kid, many churches in my area would get together to burn rock and roll records. Again, pointless.

Might as well be a hammer since it's unloaded.
