I go once a year, solely to see my elderly mother.

I really hate Chicago. I especially hate Chicago after midnight on the SE side, without a gun.

I'm an Illinois resident as well as a member of Illinoiscarry.com and I can tell you that you do not want to open carry in this state. I have a gun case from cabelas that locks and has the steel cable that is attached to the seat in my truck. When I leave, I unload it and lock it up in the gun case with the cable attached. I also printed out the ISP gun facts sheet that I keep in the case in case an over zealous cop wants to get a new toy.

If I go to walmart with the family in Illinois I will actually unlock the cable, relock the case and carry it in my planner. I keep that planner with me religiously...!!

I've since sent in for my Florida CCW and travel back and forth to Georgia at least 3 times a year.

I hate when I have to travel through Illinois. I hope our Illinois bretheren are successful with getting ccw through the legislature. It is looking better and better. The morons in Cook County are the real problem. They seem to think the rest of the state is as stupid as they are.

NO, NO, NO...IL is NOT an OC state. Sorry, to all you IL folks but I don't like traveling though your state. Notice I said through it. Traveled through there last year on my way to fish in Minnesota and had to lock everything up before I got to your state line. Did not like that at all.

One thing I did notice is that there are plenty of signs all around the rural parts of the state promoting CC. Go for it guys and keep plugging away at it.

To the OP....your post was intended as a joke. Right?

You actually believe you can OC in the Peoples Republic of Illinois? If so, you have a nice jail cell awaiting you.

My wife is from IL and when we go there, my firearm has to be unloaded and out of sight for the duration of the visit there. Not a gun friendly state, at all. Rivals New Jersey in restriction.

I've lived in Illinois all my life. You can place the firearm in a case, designed for that purpose, with the loaded clip or loose shells as stated previously so long as the weapon is not loaded and the loaded clip is not inserted in it. You can carry a firearm uncased in a vehicle if it's disassembled. Having said that let me say this. The state police in this state do not like to find a gun legally cased with a loaded clip or enough rounds to load it within that case. They also do not like to find that legally cased firearm within your easy reach. It will, most of the time, subject you to a bunch of questions and some heightened scrutiny that ain't gonna make for a happy trip. It's about 95 here today with enough humidity to wet a washcloth in a light breeze. How long would you like to stand on the side of an interstate while the state police here decide they like you again? Do not carry any firearm within any city or, even if in an extremely rural area and actively hunting, within 100 yards of a public right of way unless it is unloaded and cased. Even your bow is required to be rendered incapable of launching an arrow via lock, tie wrap, etc if not cased within that 100 yards. In short, just before the Illinois line put your gun(s) in a case and out of your reach and put the ammunition in a separate compartment [not the glove compartment or console] and don't go anywhere you might need it.

Illinois is not an open carry state and is the only state besides Wisconsin that does not have a conncealed carry statute. Your carry permit, License or Endorsement from your state or any other will not be honored in what I now refer to as the Republic of Illinois.

Wile traveling, guns must be unloaded and locked an a secure case. Ammunition must be also secured separately from the weapon in a locked secure case.

The weapons are to be transported in a separate compartment from the driver. This usually means the trunk of a car. Legal issues can happen in cases where one is driving an SUV or a Van where there is no trunk.

If you are pulled over by a state trooper, I suggest you do the following:

1. Do not exit the vehicle.
2. Cross your hands over the top of the steering wheel so they can clearly be seen by the LEO and his camera.
3. When the trooper or LEO addresses you explain that you are peacefully transporting firearms and ammunition in locked cases and in a separate compartment from your passenger compartment.
4. Ask to show the LEO your carry permit as well as any other information he will ask for including drivers license, registration and and a current auto insurance certificate.
5. If the LEO asks to inspect your vehicle, It would probably be in your best interest to allow a search so you can be on your way.

Happy Trails,

SIG
