Sometimes how people react to seeing someone OC depends upon how you are dressed. I rarely OC but when I have I've been dressed "Business Casual" - you know, Dockers, nice shirt… not jeans and printed tee.
I've never had a problem in any store, restaurant or anywhere else dressed in this manner. This might be part of some people’s problems encountered while OC’ing. But – some places might not care what your wearing if you aren’t wearing a badge. As for a particular store having a problem with it – that can and does vary from state to state and maybe city to city. Lowes in my area has no problem with OC – so far anyway – but also considering the person OC’ing being dressed as I mentioned above.

It sounds like the employee was having a problem with open carry when it was okay with the store. The employee was taking it upon himself to be anti gun.

I made a few telephone calls and eventually did get a return call from a WM Market Asset Protection Manager (MAPM) for a group of WM stores here in the LV area. Here's a brief summation as to what happened. The person I spoke with explained that OC was legal at all WM stores in the area she oversaw. She sent me an email outlining the "official policy" of OC in WM stores. I'll quote her to give her credit. "Yes, Walmart does allow open carry of firearms. Sorry for the confusion." To be clear, I spoke with her for almost 10 minutes. She advised me that she receives telephone calls from people who experience some negative experiences with WM associates regarding OC to some degree. She requested that I contact her if I experience any problems OC'ing in the future in any of the WM stores. She was very helpful in resolving the issues I raised with her. I consider this issue resolved for the time being. If I have any further difficulties I will be contacting this individual for assistance in resolving any future problems of OC issues. As a rule I normally CC but while enroute & return from work I OC. I consider this issue closed for the time being.

A supervisor and I once chased a very violent man half way across town(a small town) on foot because he stuffed $30 in steaks in his jacket. My supervisor tackled him in the middle of the street, at night, with traffic flying by. This gentleman was killed in a gunfight less than a week later. One night three guys in their mid to late twenties decided to take most of our tobacco products without paying. They took a bag, stuffed as much as they could in, and attempted to walk out the door. I've been in fights, and that was a fight. When the first deputies got there they put us all down at gunpoint just to attempt some order while they sorted things out. So there were the three thiefs, four employees and a manager all sprawled out on the floor with customers coming in and out doing their shopping. A thug grabbed some cash out of a cashier's drawer once while she was getting his change. I caught him as he entered his car and drug him back into the store by his feet while the cops were coming. As my time at that job came to an end (15+yrs ago) the higher ups were really stressing the now normal "don't chase them, don't touch them" policy. They actually wanted any manager who saw a shoplifter to call the head of loss prevention to get the okay to contact LEOs. If after normal office hours, you were supposed to leave a message. Seriously. A warning to any reading this: I was young, stupid and invincible(so I thought). Looking back I'm shocked I made it out of that job without getting sued or killed. Stores have insurance that will cover any losses, but they will not save your life or pay your medical bills or legal fees. Your life is short enough already and you don't want it to be shorter or have it spent in prison |

I worked as a security officer as one of the malls in the Las Vegas area. Part of the certification process was being aware of the laws that were involved in dealing with shoplifters. One of the most important rules was to NEVER touch, grab, hold, tackle, etc. a shoplifting suspect. The minute you touch him/her you are now guilty of the crime of "battery." Here in Nevada battery is a crime where you can be arrested & thrown in jail. In the event you injure the shoplifting suspect you are liable for any and all injuries that are received. Sad but true. The only thing we were permitted to do within the law was to request that the shoplifter accompany us to the security office. If the suspect complied with our request, fine. If the suspect dropped the stolen items and ran away, fine. You could pursue them to see where they were located for LEO's to stop & detain them. Well, enough about my experience as a mall security guard!

As a new gun owner and lover of Freedom, it's nice to know that I can still carry in NH and not feel oppressed. Thanks Doobie for the info. I'll still do business with these places as I live in Concord.
