Building trust in OC...

I have a pretty good relationship with the store owner of a local Ameristop where I live. I've been considering going in when he works and asking him if he minds (OC)...

The thing is, one day I walked in with a hat and sunglasses on. Upon entering, I removed them (deeply ingrained military habit). He just smiled and said as much. He appreciated it and recognized the offering of respect that that sort of thing entails.

I somehow don't think that he'd have much issue with my carrying in there. One important aspect of "Our Cause" is to build trust and good community relationships, right? So why not give them a chance to "second the motion" with a courteous question in regards to OC? I know all the other employees, and they like me (and vice versa). I can't really see them having anything but good to say in response.

Also, if they don't want to go "along" with OC, you can just smile and say that perhaps you'll ask at a later date. I can quietly CC very well, and the best proof of character in this kind of situation is to say (at that later date) that you have been CCing all along, and no one has been hurt and no laws have been broken. They might then "see the light" of your CCing and agree to you OCing without much argument.

I might be placing too much trust in the

, but I prefer to have people on my side than against it due to a perceived "bad attitude".

Any thoughts?

are you simply thinking about asking him his thoughts on OC just out of respect?? That I can understand, but I can also understand just OCing also. If there is no postings and its a public place.

The only reason you dont want to do this is bc you dont want to upset or feel like you are disrespecting him??

I think I would just OC and go from there,

It never hurts to ask out of respect.

That's pretty much my idea, is to ask first and maybe (crazy idea?) trust that won't shoot me down and ask that I leave. That would be his right as the owner.

I guess I am just more for building a bridge before I drive a truck over it.

I get your point. I should be able to assert my right to carry, BUT I should also respect his right as the owner to deny my carrying into his place of business. Giving him the option (I would CC after if he says no...) gives him the respect that I would like to see returned.

Maybe I'm just old fashioned like that.

P.S. How's Baghdad these days? I had to lead a detail to take a WIA BG there in '07 from Ramadi. Got stranded ("Where's the Helo back?" "What Helo back?"), and ended up chartering our flight back myself! Best dang spot in Iraq. I had Pizza Hut for the first time in...a long time.

If you want to take a little more softer approach. You could go in CCing and do an intentional flash just to get a response.

That's not a bad idea. I suppose that would work, since I'm not doing anything overt (outside of the "intentional flash").

The way I see it, the only way to find out for sure is to open carry. If you feel the owner might be against it, keep it concealed and nobody but you will know.

You can always try asking him some political questions like what he thinks about our new president, or if he heard on the news about those guys in NH and AZ open carrying at presidential events and maybe the proposed health care plan. By then you should know if he is for or against open carry or even concealed carry for that matter.

well it sounds like there has been a few good sugestions here, ask and see what his responce is, or the whoops in front of him and see what he says and thinks. Looks like its time to test the water.

As for Baghdad now, well the Iraqis are still killing each other and this place is still a s**t hole. Our part as a Combat support and combat troops has all but been eliminated. Were not allowed in the cities, unless we're escorted, and I hate doing that. you cant trust these guys here.. You know where Im coming from im sure..

Keep us posted on his reaction to you OC'ing
