I dont worry, but in my city, which has only about 30k people, the police are up on the legality of OC. A few of us even went as far as to email the chief and get is take on it, also one guy had a meeting with him and he said his officers are clear on the law. The supreme court of ohio has ruled that you cannot be charged with inducing panic if you OC, so if charged, that will not stick. I do not have tons of money, but I would be glad to fight any charge I get of OC'ing, not to mention I would sue the pants off whom ever violated my rights.

At present time many people who OC have been harassed by LEO's who think they are the only people who should be carrying a gun. I think the people out in the rural areas are okay but in the cities look to be stopped by police and at best questioned for a while and at worst have a gun pointed at you and made to lay flat on the ground while the police figure out if you are legal or not. Even then, they may still charge you with inducing panic

Unfortunately, if you are going to OC in Ohio, you really should have a lawyer lined up and plenty of money to spend on a court case. Eventually the right person will be falsely arrested and they will take it to court and then LEO's will be afraid to harass law abiding citizens again.

There are times I would like to OC, like when walking the dog or going to the gas station but most of the time, I would CC anyway.
Very well stated!

Since I live in the country, OC is no problem for me. Having my CC also helps, but I never worried about CC even before getting my permit. Knowing the local Sheriff for many years also is helpful!

I still do not understand the penchant for OC in Ohio - between the freaked sheeple, and LEO lack of consideration, I think that the $55 for the CC license is a much better route.

Look at it this way.

For some, it's about rights. They believe if you don't get out there and OC, people will think it's no big deal if the right is lost. "Nobody did it anyway".

For others, it's a matter of principle. "It is my right and I won't be harassed or bullied simply because you fear it or don't understand it".

Still others believe that it is a deterrent and don't subscribe to the "you'll be the first one they shoot". Most criminals are looking to make a quick buck and don't want to put their life on the line. Shooting you is not in their agenda, especially if they have the chance to lose something.

Some don't like to hide their gun and only have a CCW because it is easier to travel that way. I can transport my firearm legally loaded and on my person in Ohio with a CHL (and it doesn't have to be on my person but you get the point).

Others feel it is easier to draw out in the open and not tucked away. For them it is a concern if the SHTF.

Some people feel all of these ways. I agree with all the things I just said (ironic huh) but tend to lean towards CC only because of your previously-mentioned sheep response. "Oh my, he has a gun".

I'm not going to get into a debate here on OC vs CC. Just leave it lay at.. to each his own and mind how *you* do it.

I recommend that people get a CHL even if they ONLY plan to open carry. That ABSOLUTELY forecloses any game playing about "was it REALLY open?" That bit a kid in Cleveland recently who openly carried a Vz52 in a military flap holster. He rolled over where somebody with a CHL would have been on solid ground, regardless of the wishes of Frank Jackson or Cleveland cops.

ut oh!!! If you are suggesting that all OC'rs get a CHL "even if they ONLY plan to open carry"....wouldnt it then be fair to say that you are suggesting that OC'rs obtain a OC license, and do you support the idea that a OC license should be implemented

1. There's no such thing as an "open carry license" in Ohio.

2. There are a lot of "game players" in law enforcement these days. If you open carry, having a CHL tilts the playing field in your favor. You can NEVER be successfully prosecuted for unlawful CCW, regardless of what kind of holster you use, whether your gun is between the wall and your body, or whether your shirt PARTIALLY conceals the butt of your gun while sitting.

3. Are you suggesting that people in Ohio carry concealed WITHOUT a CHL?

4. I'd be happy with carrying, concealed or open, with NO license. That's of course NOT the law in Ohio. Nobody has to like the law. They just have to obey it as written. I demand that of the cops, without exception. I can hardly exempt myself. I offered a safeguard for those who choose to open carry, but don't want to leave themselves open to mischief by malicious cops. The easiest argument to win is one you don't have. No such thing as unlawful CCW when you've got a CHL, at least not in the context of my comments.

And as I previously mentioned, it makes transportation SO much easier. I concur with you.

1. Thank goodness. There are no laws and we don't need any either.

2. Agreed. But also realize that if you OC...be prepared to always defend your position...you kinda turn into a walking advocate for the 2A community. I envy those that do it it for us.

3. That would be GREAT! Why do we need a freaking license to exercise a right guaranteed in the BoR? Does Glen Beck or Rush need a license to exercise their 1A right? Furthermore, all the "libs" on the other side?

4. It is probably wise..but should not be necessary....but I guess this is the way things are nowadays.

First I want to say hello, I am new here. I do have my CHL, but I open carry most of the time. I live in Harrison County, Ohio. I have openly carried my weapon in quite a few Counties in Ohio plus West Virginia, without problems. The only people that I get ribbed from about open carry, are my friends. I recently did have a woman working in a local store ask me "your not allowed to carry that in here are you?" I said yes and kept walking . That should go to show her, that it was no problem. Nor, did I pose any danger. She is new there. I know everyone that works there but her. I guess it might make a difference where at you open carry, but it shouldn't. I am sure, that one day my decision to open carry will be tested. I plan to stand firm for my rights.

Welcome to the forum. I grew up and lived on a farm just outside of Dillonvale for most of my life. Open carry in that area is really not a big deal most places. Heard rumor that Daves Unique Sports in Dennison closed up, do you know if that's true? Shame if it is, was a real good gun store.
