The problem with this is, while you are trying to convert them, they are trying to convert you. We are supposed to appease them, but what about us. Believe me, if they would leave me alone, I would have no reason to talk to them. We ALL have rights, not just the anti-gun crowd. So when do we say, enough is enough and quit kissing their posteriors?

Today right now this moment. But I think we need to draw a very clear line between assertive and aggressive. By its very nature an aggressive posture or aggressive conduct validates the volunteer victims fears. Our polite gentlemanly & lady like conduct in the face of a rabid raving anti does far more for our cause than all the chest pounding soap box rants in the world. Something I often have to remind myself of when what I really want to do it put some arrogant self righteous moron in their place.

That's a really important point.

Reasonably frequently, I find myself faced with someone who has made an innocuous little comment about the danger of guns, or the silliness of the gun culture, or wondering out-loud about why so many people feel they need to be armed. Guns are getting a lot of play, in the media, and a lot of sheep are running around with too much propaganda being shoved into every orifice.

I, too, find it far more powerful to state the obvious, in simple terms, in a very non-confrontational manner.

For example, imagine someone in a conversation suggests guns are bad. Going off about how much good they do, or running down some statistics can likely steel the person's resolve to not hear what you're saying.

Whereas, a simple quip might work twice as well, such as: "Guns are bad? Not for a victim being attacked, they aren't." Letting that lay there in the open for a moment can do quite a bit of good. It's simple and clear, it's victim focused, it is truthful. And, it can be backed up by reading any edition of any newspaper from any metropolitan city in the country ... and the other person knows it.

There is crime enough to choke a mule, daily, and the simple perspective of defending against attack with pixie dust versus something a bit more viable goes a long way, with doubters. They're forced to be put into the shoes of the attacked, imagining what they would do if left with nothing but hopeful thinking.

Doesn't work every time. But I've turned on the "light bulb" for a dozen folks, in this way, when I'm certain they would have ceased listening if I had spewed a litany of statistics and references to Kleck and others.

My thoughts too, and one of my favorite answers here.

While I don't OC presently, I'm working toward doing so occasionally.

When I do I'll do my best to not piss sheep off, but to educate them. If they don't buy my message, that's fine, at least it was one more attempt to "evangelize".

By the way, rack of lamb is my favorite dish, so I have a hard time saying anything disparaging about genuine sheep...

One I did see mentioned a few times is that other people are uncomfortable about an OCer.

IF you are knew to Open Carry dont care about how some sheep feels.

You are protecting yourself in the best way you see fit by the rights granted by the constitution.

Dont let some sheep rule your life.
Out here in Mesa, Arizona a few years back the Fire Fighter's Chief was caught with his pants down while busying himself with a sheep. I believe he preferred Warm & Moist

Unfortunately, there are always more sheep than sheepdogs. These sheep wont fight back, but they do vote and we are the minority.

With any good herd the sheepdog gains the trust of the herd or they can not protect it and may be removed from their job as a sheepdog...it applies to us as well

Lots of good comments here. I think JD said it best.

i think these views are right on...in addition i think our chore is to educate people as to why we choose to carry or own...the more they understand the better chance they will agree...

I agree, both of these posts nailed the issue on the head.
