I work from home, so I have it with me pretty much all the time.

Late Saturday night, I had to make a run to the store. Of course, to remain legal, I disarmed before leaving. And I was not happy. Especially since it was Halloween night, and the store I was going to has been robbed a couple times this year already.

So I started thinking about OC, which led me to a couple questions:

First, is the "Virginia Tuck" legal for OC in North Carolina? I only have an IWB holster.

And second, what are the NC open carry laws, and what are the practicalities? I know NC is an "unrestricted" open carry state - but I've also heard that you can't go to a restaurant that serves alcohol, even OC, and I'm sure there are some other limitations. Also, I'm near Raleigh - are there any places that it simply wouldn't be wise to OC?

Thanks for the input!
Had a conversation the other night with a Sheriff's deputy about open carry...my conclusion was it is better to have a concealed handgun permit.

I ran into/watched a guy at walmart in Brier Creek get questioned while he was OC. They were talking towards the front entrance while I pretended to rent a move from the big red box. I wasn't involved so I didn't get the entire story but the classic line was... The LEO said to whomever, hey this is the south not new york, there is probably 10 guys in this store right now that aren't cops that are carrying guns, maybe you should move back to where ever you came from.

Brier Creek is awfully close to Cary (Containment Area for Relocated Yankees), so its quite possible just such a relocated Yankee was the complainant.

I have a friend that OC's all the time. I'm really quite proud of him. He is one of those guys that really does know his rights and is willing to vocally defend them. I actually bought him the gun he carries for his birthday the year he opened his bar. He only had one handgun at the time, and it was too big for what he needed. He also carries at his bar (mostly concealed), but OCs most everywhere else (though he does have a CHP for when he wants to cover it). We had lunch the other day and he was OCing.

Anyway, he got thrown out of Wal-Mart in Garner (I think White Oak, but I'm not sure) for OCing. Police were not called, just one of the managers told him he had to leave. Its private property, so he did just that. However, being the guy he is, he didn't leave it at that. He pushed the issue up the chain until the general manager told him he was welcome in the Wal-Mart anytime, and if he wanted to OC while he was there, he was welcome to do that too.

Where did you take the course?
I "heard" that from a number of different sources, including class. I apologize for not citing my sources. I didn't realize they were relevant to the question I was asking.

Ok. I wasn't trying to give you a hard time. These regs need to be ingrained during these classes. Intending to follow the law can still get people in trouble.

I was just asking who gave the course, not trying to get you to divulge your sources.

Containment area, I had forgotten that one. I used to deliver furniture down there and they really kept us busy.

As mentioned, there are in fact laws governing open carry. Most of the time these are related to carrying weapons or firearms in general and are not specific to one type of carry (especially open carry, since concealed carry does have its own set of rules).

I agree I would avoid OC in CH / Durham and Cary. I believe Cary has a law that prohibits open carry, actually. I know for a fact that Chapel Hill has an ordinance prohibiting open carry of an "easily concealable" firearm, which is by their definition of a length 6" or less. In other words, a lot of semiauto service models would be large enough to be exempt, but typical carry revolvers and most compact / subcompact semis would be prohibited. As for durham, I wouldn't go somewhere like that without a gun and I also wouldn't advertise it.
