logistar - yeah - let us know what they say.
FortyFive - I use Mobil1 'super synthetic' - 15W-50 ... not sure what other folks call Mobil1 - but this is as far as I know what we generally talk about.

Lately
I have been using Disotec XFR (Extreme Friction Reduction) by Blue Wonder for all of my firearm internals. I am very impressed with that product.
For my pistol Frame To Slide I use a SECRET PASTE that I make myself using: Vintage Sperm Whale Oil Pure Lanolin White Grease to make a very thin paste...just thick enough to stay put but, thin enough not to impede slide travel. Whoops! ~ Now it's not a secret anymore! ![]() |

Actually
Sperm Whale Oil & Pure Lanolin (derived From Sheep Wool) was not my invention.
It was (at one time) a quite popular firearm lubricant but mostly used to lubricate fishing reels. It really stayed put and was extremely waterproof & slippery stuff. I just added some White Grease to that formula to "heavy it up" a tiny bit. ![]() |

This is what one used back when for firearms, I used it!! I finally ran out and cannot find it. For new folks - Sperm Whale Oil was used for/ sought after many things. One in particular was the new "auto shifting" transmissions. Seems the transmissions stayed popular, the method of obtaining a steady source of the lubricating fluid - fell out of favor. Used in Lamp oil , and in cosmetics are two other uses. Automatic Transmission Fluid was then made in the laboratory to simulate the excellent lubrication, anti-corrosive, anti-rust, temperature extremes, low temp flow...etc., of Sperm whale oil. By the way since the late 50's or so , ATF is "synthetic". Depends on Spec'sfor the individual trannies, still in part has been to some degree synthetic. Some moreso than others. I cannot find Sperm Whale Oil . In the meantime Havoline Dexcron III has been doing a fine job of lubricating my firearms. Then again the old Gulf Dexron I , The Ammoco Dexron II , did the same thing. ![]()

Sperm Whale Oil information
Not to Hijack the thread but Sperm Whale Oil is a fantastic firearms oil.
BAD for the Whales but, good for the shooters...there is about none around anymore. I still have some very old stock for my own personal use. INTERESTING FACTS ABOUT SPERM WHALE OIL Sperm Whale oil was THE High R.O.F. Machine Gun Oil of choice. It does NOT freeze or thicken in Ultra~Cold temps AKA Sub~Zero. It's still the only lubrication suitable for use in DEEP SPACE APPLICATIONS. Our Fed Gov...keeps a reserve supply of it. It was used in War II by the British as a foot rub to prevent trench foot. It was the best oil for muzzle loading patch ball lubrication It was the best oil for reconditioning old, dry leather since it most closely replicated both human & animal natural skin oils. It was used for slot machines (because it stays where you put it) ~ & peanut/bubble gum vending machines since it contains no petroleum solvents or by~products AKA no solvent smell. It does not permanently stain clothing. At one time highly refined whale oil was used a gynecological instrument lubricating oil. (no "wise" comments please) It was used as a "base" oil for balms and salves & lotions. It was used as a fine clock & watch oil. It was the best ship chronograph oil. Yes, you're correct I think Corvette used it as a transmission oil? I use it to final "wet sand" my ivory since it does not make ivory transparent & it helps to promote a beautiful natural patina. It was used as a furniture polishing oil as it replaced the natural oils in wood without degrading the wood fiber structure. CURRINS WHALE OIL PASTE was a mixture of Whale Oil & Pine Pitch and it was used to totally waterproof LumberJack Boots And MAN DID THAT EVER STINK! Oh...I could probably think of lots more. BUT, it requires killing whales to get it & that is why you'll not ever see it being produced or used anymore. There you have it folks...MORE than you EVER wanted to know about Sperm Whale Oil. ![]()
