Wal-Mart only carries safes during hunting season, at least that's what my Wal-Mart does.
Check garage sales and estate sales you might get lucky.

Hmm- I'm visit the various wal-marts around town pretty regularly and I've never seen one. It's probably just because of wher I am right now.

Start with a small safe for now and upgrade later.

My safe is unlocked when myself or wife is at home and then it gets locked when we leave.

I've got 4 kids(4mos to 11years) and start them with gun safety very early.

Just find a closet, take out the cheap doorknob and put a deadbolt in there. Same size holes and you can put the knob back when you move.
