I didn't intend to give you a hard time. It's just this same question was asked twice within the last month and it's been the same people who reply with the same answers. I simply meant that you'd probably get those same answers here and by looking up the earlier posts, you (and the people who reply) will not need to go through the time and trouble of waiting for those replies.

I see them as a help but they dont replace proper shooting with sights, and they do help with trigger control.

I'd like to revise my stance on this issue a bit.
I feel the laser sight is very useful for protecting yourself at home, especially in low light situations. Your home is one of the few places where shooting someone at more than 5 feet away could still be justified as self-defense. I'd like a red dot at night when I know an intruder is looking back at me from across my bedroom.
However, out in the everyday world is where I don't see it being very useful in a self-defense situation. Perhaps if you were hiding behind something while a BG was shooting up the place and you actually DID have time to line up your shot, then it would help. But for most confrontational attacks, you are going to be shooting at less than 5 feet, and most likely at less than 3 feet.(no laser needed)

Blackhawk, first of all, I would like to say I appreciate your replies...they seem to be among the few of the ones that were well thought out and it gives me some things to think about.
P95, RAchilders, after reading the dribble that came out of this thread, I can definitely understand why you gave me a hard time about starting this post. I thought this would be more of a poll and give me something to go on. Anyway, from what I see so far, (as well as the other posts), the best advice I have been given so far seems to be from Blackhawk...

The only advantage with a laser is that your wallet is a lot lighter so you will be able to move faster.

Concerning a prosecutor having a field day in court because someone had a laser installed might happen, one of our students, nothing was brought up on him having a laser installed and was given a no true bill for the shooting he was in. Now I can see issues if an installed laser was not properly sighted in and caused the shooter to miss their target and hit an innocent, that I can see.

i like the laser. real world stats are showing hit ratio's going up. i'm not looking to scare the BG, if it happens and stops the fight before it starts that would be great. But when my life is on the line i'm going to use all the modern tech stuff proven. And i've not heard of the light failure. And if it does, i'm point shooting anyway. For practice I can't beat them. I've gotten faster with my iron sights, too. It's also helping me in coaching some of my family in learning to sight and shoot. It helped me show my mom the trigger press vs trigger squeeze. It's gotten to the point that I dont want to carry without it. And i'm on the range monthly, atleast.

+1
I bought a set, tried them, sold them....... End of story.
I found that looking for that little light was a real problem, instead of drawing and firing COM , twice, fast, I was looking for a little red light, slow

I use one and think they are a god send. I have trained learned practiced with iron sight for over thirty years. I'm an OK shot, at least I bring home most game I have in my sights.

In a SD I don't see how I would be using them. Chances are I will be shooting one handed blasting at my target as quickly as I can. A laser sight is the solution to when you can not use iron sights, shooting from the hip, around a corner or awkward position. So yes instead of iron sights. Or point shooting, I know, if I am using the dot it isn't point shooting I've heard that.

The fact remains that focused on my target not my sights not looking for a red dot but seeing it as I am squeezing the trigger I take down my targets quicker and more accurately. As I have said before it is not like you track or follow the dot. You focus on the target, point your gun at the target fire see the dot. Those last three thing happen almost simultaneously. It is a whole different way of sighting or shooting. A different mind set than what I had.

As far as the laser failing, well of course it can. So can I and so can my gun. As with me and my gun, properly maintained the laser should not fail any more than I or the gun. My laser lets me know my batteries are low for two and half hours of use before the battery dies. As other have said as well worst case scenario if it dies according to Murphy's law. Than I still do have my iron sights or in my case my TFO's.

If you are new to shooting learn to use your sights, learn to hit the bulls eye. Learn to hit that bulls eye at 25 yards, it takes a long time or at least it did me. That is what will teach you the basics. If you have a trainer using iron sights with a laser sight will help your trainer see what you are doing right or wrong. I don't know that it will help a new shooter, if you don't know what it means that the laser jumps up down or sideways as you are firing.

Last, if your attorney can not justify the use of a properly equipped gun, set up to assist you in not hitting innocent by standers enough to make it a non issue, he/she is an complete incompetent moron, fire them before they get a rope put around your neck.
