I have been looking for a secure way to lock a pistol in the car when I can't carry. I've checked out a lot of products online but never found anything that really looked all that great. Yesterday, however, I was at the local truck accessory shop doing some last minute Christmas Shopping and I found what I've been looking for. It is a portable padded lockbox with a frame that can be mounted to the vehicle. The box locks independently and can be locked into the frame that stays with the vehicle. It is also substantial, being made out of 16 gauge steel. Extra frames are available if you want to move one box between vehicles or have one for the house, too. The box can be found at

I never ran across this one in any of my online searches, but it is exactly what I've been looking for. I bought the last 2 that my local shop had.

ETA: I paid about $100 plus tax for the box, and given the quality of the product, I think its a good value for the money.

The picture doesn't seem to show the box mounted or attached...that would not work well. There doesn't seem to be a way 9in the pic) to mount that box and open it.

Where were you going to mount it? Can it be attached via a cable somehow?

Interesting lock box...looks solid...just need to mount it.

Personally, I use the COM safe...works for me.

The web site shows a "Gun Sleeve", I think that's the part that mounts to the vehicle and it looks like the box locks to it. I'll stick to the COM too though!

The mounting bracket can be mounted standing up or flat. The lock box slips into and locks to the mounting bracket. The lock on the box has 2 positions. 90 degrees locks the box, a further 90 degrees locks it into the mount. The lock is also spring loaded so you can turn the lock the full 180 degrees and then snap the box into the bracket. Once installed in the bracket, the mounting screws are covered. The box must be removed from the bracket in order to open it. I intend to install the first one in a friends car under the seat. It is made of 16 ga steel, so it is pretty substantial. I looked at the COM safes. According to the specs they are made of 21 ga steel, which seems pretty thin. For those that have them, are they pretty rugged?

I've got three COM boxes, but my personal preferred box is home-made.

I started with a small military ammo box, JB Welded a large/ quality hasp to it. When dried, I drilled all eight holes and installed bolts. After intentionally stripping the exposed bolt heads, I JB welded both ends of the bolts and filled the holes (so as to remain water tight). Now I just use a heavy cable and quality lock to secure it.

Yes it can be defeated, but I feel it offers greater resistance than the COM safe does, and I can store much more that just a gun.

It fits under the seat of my truck. The other vehicles seats are too low, hence the COMs for them.
