I would like nothing better than to outfit my 22's with a suppressor. For some unknown reason, the state of MO won't let me. I can buy a machine gun, destructive device, just about anything I want, provided I do the paperwork and pay the taxes, but no amount of hoop-jumping can get me a legal suppressor.

I'm campaigning with the local pro2a groups to get this one on the list of laws we should be going after in the near future.

Everything is done in duplicate. When you get the paperwork back and it has the tax stamp on it, you take it to your dealer, pay the rest of the money on the suppressor, and it is your to keep.

Really not as big a deal as it is made out to be. Your dealer will help with all of this.
Is that a one time fee per item?

Is that a real possibility? Anyone. I like to invite my guests.

That fee must be paid for each item, each and every time the item changes ownership.

Thats right. Everytime you purchase or make a suppressor, its a 200 fee.
If you sell yours to someone else, they pay the 200 fee.

As long as you keep it, its just a 200 one time fee. If you want to make one, you must fill out a Form1, get it approved, and then make it. It must have name, adress, state and a serial number that you come up with affixed to it.

Yep. Here's a link.
STREETSWEEPER - IMPORTANT NOTICE
ATF seized the shipping records from the manufacturer, then went to the local FFLs to follow up. If you didn't pay the $200 transfer tax, you sure better have your DD turned in (no comp, IIRC).

Basically, if they decide something is controlled, or needs to be impounded for the public safety, it will happen. Class III can be fun, but increasingly risky, from a purely financial perspective (seizure w/o compensation), regardless of any legal/revised liscensing fees that may come up.

Thanks, not horrible. For some reason I thought there was an annual fee. What about the implication that its an invitation for the feds to "visit" at will? I have a generally poor opinion about uninvited / unexpected guest. More than one person has gotten a greeting they did not expect just dropping by.

So having a class III opens you up to warrant less searches? Or warrants based on supposition?

Please understand, the ATF is a "Bureau"; it may issue "directives" that have the force of law. IOW, if the Tech Branch decides that registered Uzi FA and SBRs are too dangerous to be in the hands of civilians, yes, they may come and knock on the door of a registered owner, give the owner a writ (notification) and impound the weapon.

Equally, as with the Streetsweeper, if there is "reasonable supposition" that one is in possesion of an unliscensed/unregistered Destructive Device (you're listed as having purchased the newly classified DD, and havent made application for registration) they certainly will be coming to visit.

The ATF, IRS, EPA and many others can make any or all of us felons with the literal stroke of a pen. The convenience is that they could plead "exigent circumstances" and "preponderance of evidence"- you bought a Streetsweeper (they have the yellow sheet in-hand), and you might make it disappear. No warrant needed, just possibly an apology to the court.
