Range bag

When I go to the range I have a pistol on my hip as well as a rifle and my range bag. I generally carry the following in the range bag, the ammo selection depends on what rifle and spare pistol I bring. I rarely go thru all of the ammo but I usually go thru at least 200 rnds of .45 ACP/9mm, 100 rnds .22 LR and 50 to 100 rnds for whatever rifle I bring. If I bring my .308 I will generally bring 40 rnds but rarely go thru more that 20 because of cost. I ALWAYS bring twice as much ammo as I plan on shooting.

Ammo
500 rnds .45 ACP or 9mm
500 rnds .22 LR
100 Rnds .30 Carbine or .223
Pistol in 9x12 soft case
Cleaning kit with screw drivers
Eye and ear protection
Ball cap
Field glasses
8 ½ x 11 targets
Staple gun
Measuring wheel (4” wheel on a handle that retracts to 16” in length)
Notebook/log book
First aid kit

I realize that ammo selection will vary depending on what you bring to the range and how much you shoot in each trip, but aside from that do you have any suggestions or comments on my range bag contents?

I am also looking for a new range bag. Right now I am using an old small travel duffle that works, but it just is not convenient. I was thinking about going out and looking for a backpack style of bag that has a separate compartment in the bottom where I can put the ammo (the heaviest item in the bag!!!) with a larger upper compartment for the rest of the gear. I was thinking of the backpack style because I figure it would be easier to throw that kind of weight over one or both shoulders rather than carrying it in a hand. And I really do not want to go back to carrying an ammo can separate from my range bag.

Any ideas?

Thanks,
Tim……..

Just about any large gym bag can work. I use the Super Range Bag from Galati International. Blackhawk Tactical also makes some good range bags. You might consider a need for two bags. One for ammo and the other for everything else. Especially if you tend to take a lot of stuff with you. Some guys just use a bag for gun and ammo. Others bring the kitchen sink.

My sons gave me a Midway range bag for Christmas. The thing is almost as big as my first car's trunk! All kidding aside, it's a great buy and will exceed your expectations!

I've got this one:
MidwayUSA - GunMate Shooting Range Bag Nylon Black

On sale for $17.99 right now BTW.

Also have this one:
ZAP-143 - Black Range Shooters Bag 15x9x8" Brand New - Manufactured by: Cheaper Than Dirt

The smaller bags work great for me. I can easily pack two pistols, two pairs of ear muffs/glasses, lots of ammo, enough mags, otis cleaning kit and other miscellaneous stuff if needed.

Here's another good option for a smaller bag:
49598 - Bulldog Cases Deluxe Range Bag, Nylon, Black - Manufactured by: Bulldog Cases

I use a Bagmaster Pro Shooters bag - small. They have a good selection and I can attest that they are well built. If you're feeling spendy check out the leather bags.

I've gotten to the point of having a range bag for guns and support stuff and another bag just for ammo.
