I would get one of each, 1 1/4" and 1 1/2". I ended up getting two custom, local made belts for me, and both cover any situation. The commercially available (store bought) belts I've had actually measure 1 3/8" in general. I seldom go for the dress/exotic belts. In my experience most belt loops and holsters are compatible with either. I do recommend the 1 1/2" for the heavier carry options, but it's not so much of a necessity for Inside Waistband carry as Outside Waistband.

Get the 1.5", its pretty standard. The 1.75" would be really wide. Beltman has some great belts, also check out Mitch Rosen. He has some very nice belts as well.
