Do you want to carry this or is it for the house/vehicle? Keep in mind if you plan on using it indoors too bright can be a bad thing - you'll blind yourself. Just my two cents. That said - Surefire.

I've got a 2 D-cell Maglight in every room in our apartment (and both cars) for those bump in the night situations and during power outages, works great for those issues.

I also have a Surefire 6P for times when I feel the need to carry a personal light. The issue I have with that is, in a dark room in the middle of the night (or even outdoors at night) while it would temporarily blind an assailant, it also tends to destroy my night vision at the same time. At some point I intend to replace the 6P with an LED model from Pentagon Lights, possibly a blue or green LED to save my night vision... and some cash as well.

I don't know about you guys, but I recently followed the advice of a poster in one of these threads regarding an LED tactical light that is made by Ray-O-Vac that I picked up at wally world. The light puts out 120 lumens, has many of the same features my surefire 6p has, but puts out 40 more lumens.

The best feature was the price, only 20 bucks. I am buying several of them for the house.....

I recently got the Fenix L1T. Using one cheap, simple AA battery, it simply blows away my Surfire G2. I mean....blows it away. Since the G2 uses extremely expensive C cells, it will remain as a house type of response light. I would never consider carrying it again since it is twice the size of the Fenix.
Hard to belive but it also blows away the full size rechargable Mag light.
Has 4 levels of light output plus a strobe. Tailcap pushbutton, lanyard, sheath, spare o-rings. All for $45 delivered.

Surefire better wake up and get with it because they are getting left behind like they are tied to a stump!

Hope you're not talking about the little OD 2xAA 80 lumen version are you? Not 80 lumens, BTW.

Check at Wal-Mart again. There is a new Coleman Max with one of the newer Cree LED's. It says it is 115 lumens at the LED. Probably true, but no more than 100 coming out the front. This is however the new and improved best bang for the buck flashlight.

Chooie's right. We need more information to steer you in the correct direction. Take a stab at his questions and you'll get a better recommendation.

For example, you want a different light if you are going to put it in your pocket and always have it with you (bright LED, maybe - fairly broad beam, but limited size) than if you want it on your bedstand to check for bumps in the night (larger, bulkier and heavier OK, HID maybe, but fairly broad beam). You want a different light than either of those if you want to spotlight far away things in a field (HID probably, but large reflector, pinpoint beam)...

I also followed that suggestion and also have several. At about $20 running on AA batteries they are cheap to own and operate. They are now my spare motorcycle, car, tool box, camping and around the house bump in the night flashlights. They provide a nice long lasting bright broad field of light. A bit big for pocket carry and at the claimed 80 lumens they are not blinding enough for SD but bright enough to light up and see whatever you need to.
For blinding SD light and day to day carry I use my
Novatacs.

I got mine from K&D CNC machined from aircraft grade aluminum they are nearly indestructible and waterproof to 66 some feet. At 1 X 3 inches barely bigger than a lighter they are small enough to pocket carry. They have four pre-programmed settings, 3 brightness levels plus a strobe function and a dimming function that lets you know the battery needs replacing. At 10 Lumens the lowest default settings it is handy for whatever I may need a light for, the second setting at 42 lumens adequately lights up any area, the maximum setting of 85 or 120 lumens turns night into day and is blinding. The emergency strobe is attention getting and disorienting. I have one on my HD shotgun in a Mako-T Grip that is attached to the front / slide pump. Mako-T Grip lets me trigger operate the light while mainlining my grip on the gun. The wife & I each carry one in our pocket and have another one on our night stands. IMO they are a great top quality little light that will do everything you will need a light to do at a reasonable price and affordable to operate. You can get more info on them at Novatac.com

Surefire is the only serious light that I consider.

I just got mine that I ordered off of ebay. It's an ultrafire g6 (read surefire knockoff) but this thing really does turn night into day!!! It runs off of 2 123 batts but they provide 4 plus a spare charger. got it for 36 including shipping and took a week coming from Hong Kong. Great little lite. also look at the nitecore ex10 for 60 bucks. That thing looks sweet
