gun safe

I'd like advice on gun safes. I'd like to keep the price at $1K or less. Thanks for input.

Liberty makes a cheaper model. I was in Lowe's today and they had a fire resistant one, 28" wide, for $674.00 A smaller Liberty, 20" wide, was for $374. This is Liberty's cheapest line, the Centurion Model. Check their web site.
Liberty Safe for Gun Safes and Home Safes.
Remember, you want the most size you can afford. In one year I went from a $150 Stack-on, to a $360 Sentry safe, to a $2300 Liberty Lincoln. I hated spending that much money but I am glad now that I did.

I like my Stack-On "Total Defense" fireproof/waterproof 28 gun with mechanical tumbler. It's not an AMSEC but it's not $6000 either.

In CO my research came back with Gander Mountain having the best prices that I could find for the size and fire rating I was interested in. I ended up going with a newer model from Liberty called the FatBoy. Check the buyers guide out that retsupt99 pointed out earlier and do your homework. I found it to be a bit frustrating personally as it was more involved than I anticipated up front.

The main extra bits I would add ... You will likely want more space that you originally plan for. If you think you need 16 guns today .. you will likely want more space after it's loaded up etc ... Plan for space for ammo, and expect you may not want it all stacked up on the shelves as the weight can cause them to collapse if you're not careful. Most safes that I saw (I wasn't looking in the $2K+ range mind you) use simple shelving units like a bookshelf so your mileage may vary if you really load them up! I made this mistake on day one and my ammo came cascading down ... big mess .. lesson learned. Best not to repeat my stupidity. :-)

Think about what other items you might want to store like paperwork etc ... and where in it will go. The space ratings are pretty optimistic in my experience. In other words to actually get as many guns in as a safe is rated for makes for a very cramped safe and it becomes a PITA to get things in/out easily. The Fatboy I bought came with the pockets in the door which are great for handguns, mags etc ...

Search around - Liberty Safe - Fatboy

I got this one for $1100 at Gander, though it did cost me another $250 to get it delivered and placed in my home (which was a serious effort!).

Hope this helps.

Homak makes a great inexpensive unit from $90 (Small) to under $250 (Large). They are not fire and waterproof but they will keep unwanted hands off the guns & ammo
