mfcmb -- I agree that a laser isn't likely to deter someone once shots are flying in both directions.
But attacks don't always involve shots going in two directions. Especially when you're talking about a tiny gun, the laser could quite literally be the most obvious sign that the defender has a gun in the first place. Maybe she draws the gun because a guy is threatening her with a knife, or even just superior size & strength. Again, there's a difference between seeing a gun and seeing that a bullet is about to pierce your upper chest. I'll parrot Crimson Trace's common argument: given how much a self-defense shooting will cost you in legal fees, even if the laser has just a small chance to saving you from having to fire, it's paid for itself countless times over. |

Some time ago, I was standing in line for my favorite BBQ spot and the line was outside and it was very dark. Suddenly the unmistakeable dot of a laser painted my chest! Man I about freaked! I had my cover garment halfway swept and I was in a semi-crouch scanning the darkness trying to discern the threat. Then a KID hops into view, giggling and waving his POINTER! I went to the parents and sweating and shaking I told them their kid could get killed in Miami with that "toy." I did not tell them I had almost drawn on the brat, but I explained very carefully. THe mom grabbed the laser from her son and tossed it down a grated storm drain. The kid was glaring all daggers at me for getting his toy trashed. "Dad" I think knew what had almost happened since I think he was standing near me when I went into "ready to go RED mode." I explained the whole thing to my wife and she was very shaken as well. Not every laser dot is a sight.

Lasers and Lights -dux
One of the reasons I frequent this forum is the vast knowledge of many forum members.
I'm CCW, FFL, a certified journeyman gunsmith and an avid shooter. I must admit I have not been shooting all my life as many members here have. I'm a student of defensive carry and a good marksman. I'm not much of a hunter. My focus is defensive carry and target shooting and smithing. There is a big difference in the topics I focus on. I appreciate every members reply I receive. Thank you all. ![]()
