Mine is currently outfitted with an 18650 lithium ion battery pack, and stainless steel bezel with tritium inserts. I also have a 2x123A and 1x123A battery pack and carry the 2x123A pack for spare power, but never have had to use it.

Regarding initial output, as Todd mentioned, you have to choose what works best for you. The HDS Ultimate series, like the Novatac "P" series are quite programmable, but you still must make some choices. They have four easily accessible and customizable output levels. Runtime on low output levels can be nearly forever.

I have mine set to start at 60 lumens (slightly less than the 85 lumen max).

If Todd didn't want the strobe first, he could set the initial setting to whatever output he wanted, and if he then held the button down, it would go to full power. For example, he could set the initial output to 30 lumens, and then when he held the button down he'd get the full 120 lumens.

Also, if you want to "start" with a different setting, you can just hold the light against yourself, and click the number of times for your setting before exposing the light. I do this all the time to get my .3 lumen ultra low setting at night w/o blinding myself.

This light hasn't left my pocket for about four years now.

I find myself pining once again for a single CR123 light, but don't want another Surefire (nothing wrong with them, I just want something different). I've had an EX10, used a friend's Nitecore Extreme, and want something far tougher than your typical single cell EDC type light like the Fenix P1D. I think I have my heart set on a Ra Twisty 85 with the red low.

NiteCore SmartPD EX10. Runs off one CR123 battery, and I can drop it in my pocket and forget it's there until I need it. Bright, too.

Nitecore Tactical LEDs

Pretty much anything from the Nitecore line except the D20 (a little big for EDC since it uses 2xAA cells)...

I have a coast LED, with 9 white outer LEDs and the Red LED center. I keep it in my briefcase, along with a small keychain type maglite that takes one AAA battery in my pocket.

I am home when it's dark, so I don't feel much need to have a flashlight mounted to my person. When I used to weld pipes, I always had one on my belt, so I could look inside at my root pass and inspect it with a mirror. Now, I don't need to do that.

I do keep these with me though, in case I get caught in an emergency inside a building and the power goes out or is disrupted.

It' more of a safety thing to me, I don't want to be trying to grope my way to an exit in the dark if something goes down.

I have a LED Lenser v10 coast that my father gave me a couple of years ago. It's small and compact. Its been a great light, but I'm looking for something a little bigger and brighter. It's still works great though.

This topic issue drove me insane!

Following my review of an interesting thread, whereby a member had to draw his weapon, he stated: "My surefire was in the truck. I really wish I had had it on me at the time. 3 feet away, and it was useless. It would have been nice to be able to illuminate the BGs so I could get a more accurate description other than "white male". I'll be carrying it from now on."

Anyway, I had no idea that such a pithy device was going to have me doing so much research. Can anyone spell OCD? So, I finally decided on the SF E1B and box of batteries, since they offered me a discount when I called today. Of all the features I considered, the single most important to me was the bi-directional flashlight clip. Yeah, I know, I know... there are other brands with better specs, etc, etc..
Regards,
