.....and a matching mag pouch or two. If you have some idea of what sorts of activities he either will most engage in, or will most enjoy engaging in, get him some gadgets that will help him with those things. For DUI enforcement, for instance, get him a Streamlight Stylus LED light in red. It's a lot easier to get drunks to follow the red light than the tip of a pen during the HGN test. For building searches, get him a decent tactical light to mount on his pistol, if it has a rail. If it DOESN'T have a rail, consider getting him one of those mounts to attach a light to the bottom of a magazine......and the light, and a spare magazine. I'm with Sixto on the pen-style handcuff key. There's nothing handier. Another HIGHLY useful item I've used is an earpiece for my duty radio. I forget who makes it, but it's basically an acoustic tube that goes to the ear, attached to a mini-speaker that plugs in to the shoulder mike. Use the inside-the-ear frame instead of the foam plug, and you can hear just fine around it, but nobody else can hear your radio. Cool Cop? I don't know. Never used it myself, or seen it used. What I always do is turn the A/C way up high, unbutton my top one or two buttons, grab onto the top front center of my vest, and flap it like a madman to pump the hot air out and let the cool air in. I wish they still made those thickly ribbed undershirts. They worked much better than this CoolMax nonsense. |

Of all my gifts many years ago, I still have my Mont Blanc pen with my name and badge number engraved on it. Those were the days when everything was hand written, and it's lasted. I'll lose a nineteen cent Bic in a half hour, but always took great care of my "good" pen.

Although I had been a fan of surefire after many years of personal use in the field through night time extrications with the FD and roadside med calls with EMS, I really think they're way over priced... You can find equally rugged, reliable and even more powerful lights like the Fenix TK10, EagleTac T100C2, and Olight M20 for a fraction of the price... Google "pinnacle light tunnel" and see for yourself.

One question, is he going to be a patrol officer or corrections? Corrections I would say a nice cooler if he takes his lunches, preferably soft sided. Another is really great pair of boots, department issue can suck a lot of the times, and often you only get one pair. If you can get away with it, steel toes.
As a patrol officer most of that's been already covered well enough.

It's already been mentioned, but my recommendation is on cut resistant, kevlar-lined gloves. Whether he'll be working in the SO's jail or on patrol they are a great thing to have.

In that price range, a SureFire L4 Luma Max...100 lumens...the perfect light source.
He'll learn to appreciate its size and power...will last a lifetime! ![]()
