I have a Streamlight TLR-1 on my Glock 23 and a Surefire G2. Looking to buy a Fenix TK10 as an upgrade to the G2.

A non WML is a better choice by far.

I have a Streamlight TLR-1 but don't EDC it attached to the gun. More for nightstand duty. I have had to use a weapon mounted light in my own home in low light. Let me say that I learned a couple of things. 1) A weaponlight should be used in conjunction with a handheld light and 2) anyone who has one should get a lot of training on their use. They're not fool proof.

Only have a light mounted on my shotgun, hand held for use with handgun, either a sure fire G2 or E2D.

If the question you're asking really is, "Which one is best?", normally distilled down to "I can only have one"... then a handheld is the way to go. The weapon-mounted light is really trick, but limits you in several ways.

As several posters have already said, both is the way to go. Keep the handheld light on your person, and have the WML handy.

The world is truly round... the same old things keep coming up. I have noticed a surge of interest on these gun boards of folks wanting to conceal-carry with a light on their pistol. No matter how many times those of us who have actually carried and used a WML try to tell them -"It is not the greatest idea for concealed carry"- they keep trying it; and end up with a somewhat expensive holster that never gets used.

OTOH, carrying the WML on your belt, for use if needed, works quite well. I did this with my G19 the last few years of my career, when I had moved into plain clothes. I carried a G35 with mounted M3 on SWAT for many years, so I'm familiar with both environments.

Just put the WML (or a handheld light, or a pager, or a cell phone, etc.) anywhere on your belt BUT next to your spare magazine/s. Otherwise, one day you'll end up trying to stuff said accessory into your pistol's mag well during a reload.

Don't ask me how I know that... ;)

This is a thread I will digest. I have the NovaTac 120T on order (120-lumen max, strobe, and down to .3-lumen min.).
I'm not limiting myself to one light, but, based on the above posts, the 120T is a good starter kit.
LSP Officer 972, thanks for your well-considered, straight-up post and for the service that rendered the great advice. That's what this forum is all about and what makes it so worthwhile! I'd like to take this opportunity to welcome you.

And thank you, sir, for the tactical reply.

I carry a handheld light (Surefire E2L or E2DL, but most often the E2L). I also keep a good handheld light in various places and bags (BOB, GHB/medical bag in my car, all vehicle glove boxes, and stashed around the house - computer desk, kitchen drawer, tool box, safe). Most of these are Surefire LEDs, but the light in my wife's glove box is an incandescent Surefire G2, and some of the household lights are cheaper AA models from Fenix (no sense wasting CR123 cells for general use!). I am not against rail mounted lights, but I agree that they have to be supplemented by a handheld light for CCW/EDC purposes. If you always shine a light at what you're looking at, you make yourself and your path known. With a handheld light, you can bounce light off of a ceiling or wall while keeping your gun trained where you look, something that Rob Pincus shows clearly on an episode of The Best Defense.

I usually always have a flashlight in my pocket on a keychain and a multi lamp LED in my breifcase. Neither are intended to be "tactical." Whatever that means these days.

I carry them in case I need a light to see something in a dark place, like behind or under a desk or something like that, or if the power goes out in a building.

I keep a small light on my keyring as well and use a WML on my HD Glock, but not on my carry pistols. I would prefer some sort of laser device such as a Crimson Trace to a WML on the handgun that I would carry concealed. JMHO. I voted to carry a light that does not mount on my EDC handgun. There have been times when I needed a light, but not my pistol.
