Once you use it, never depend on that can again, use it for training. make sure you replace the can every 3 years and don't let it freeze. Use the old can for training as well.

Sabre Red (in a blue can) is likely the hottest you will find. Damned stuff is hot....

I have some experience with MSI "Mace" products and I like the flip top styles. Easy to use under stress. I was told by some corrections officers I work with that the inmates know to wipe the gels and foams off and fling it back at the officers, but it should work on any dog that hasn't done time in the joint.

As I understand it, sprays designed and labeled for use against dogs are limited to a certain percent, much lower than the human stuff.

Cans are cheap, get two, train with one and carry the other. If it gets used in an emergency, replace it. Cheap insurance.

Yep..Thats why I recently bought my wife one of their 10% 3/4oz.flip-tops(their new pink model Hot Pink Mace Pepper Spray With Keychain) ..that and the fact she won't carry a 2.oz Fox flip can(which i'd prefer) but she thinks thier to bulky
..I to carried MSI products for several years and found they are a good reliable and effective product with good QC.
Though I do wish some of the other companies would add flip-tops to their smaller models to ..as you said they are safer and more instinctive..also durable from my experience, as i have seen several Spin-tops that leaked, broke or failed ..and on my leg

Can pepper spray be used multiple times (before the can is empty) or is one spray all you get?
Any Good OC spray will serve in this role ..also the sprays designated specifically for canines is weaker than for humans ..don't forget their nose (the primary target on a dog ;) and smell sensitivity is often a million times that of ours.
Might as well carry a can that is effective against both.
1 Foggers or 2 Cone patterns are best for hitting the mark on dogs and critters in general and they leave lingering barriers that penetrate the respiratory system more readily ..But in exchange are more susceptible to the wind ..though less so with the cone pattern.

Even the smallest 1/2oz cans will net you several shots ,though might as well get one for practice to.
Here's a few paragraphs on the subject from a site....

The best strategy for defending yourself against an animal attack of any kind is pepper spray. Either those designed for use against human attackers or those specifically meant for dog or bear attacks will be effective against wild animals and pets that are attacking you or have come after your pets. One benefit of carrying pepper spray as your self-defense device of choice is that it can be used against any human or animal attacker.

This multi-purpose self-defense weapon is small enough to carry in your pocket, and some pepper spray canisters can even be used as a keychain, making them easy to carry with you when you're jogging or going for a walk. Pepper spray is non-lethal, even when used against small animals, unlike many other types of self-defense products. Another benefit is that it works from a distance, which will keep you from having to get too close to an enraged animal.

Even if you're just walking your dog around your neighborhood, you never know what could happen. If you are going into wild animals' territory, your risks increase. With pets or wild animals, your best course of action is to avoid confrontation, if possible. If an animal begins attacking, pepper spray devices are simple products well worth carrying with you to ensure your safety against attacking humans or animals.

Well I haven't seen it posted here so I'll do it. I don't know how easily available it is but bodyguard spray is all that Dallas Police will carry. While fox labs claims they have a 5.3 million shu model, it is not as effective because the capsicum concentration is not as high. Sabre red is the next most popular here in the DFW metro area and my personal opinion is that the cone spray is the most effective. It can still reach out and touch somebody, but is more forgiving than a stream with a bigger spread.

All our department will carry is the Fox Labs 5.3. Yes, that is 5.3 million scoville heat units. The OC concentration is high enough. Every single one of us had to be sprayed with the 5.3 during the police academy and it was the worst three days of my life.

When I was sprayed with Fox 5.3, I suddenly realized what they meant about a persistent chemical agent from when I was taking the annual chem warfare class in the USAF.

I assure you, even though I scrubbed my face with Dawn dishwashing liquid, 8 hours later my face felt like it was still on fire. And every once in a while, like if you sweat, it will REACTIVATE. The pain seems like it's unbearable. The best thing about it is the flip top, which prevents accidental discharge.

Well, I used to be a zookeeper yrs ago. Took care of bears. You are right, some works, some don't. I would personally look for 10% in a fog pattern, not the little bitty keychain version, but the slightly bigger model. Reason? The 5% may/may not work. That keychain model don't have enough! Some dog breeds the 5% will not affect. (just like humans-pepper doesn't work against hispanics always or S. American people-they'd just laugh at you cause they eat it all the time!) Remember you really have to shake it to active the pepper-before you spray it or it won't be as effective as well...
The 10% in a fog pattern (because it gets into the nasal membranes quicker/more effectively) will stop a charging grizzly bear). Find it cheap & buy 3 cans. Use one to practice with. Get used to backspray (if wind blows it back at you...it's not that bad-don't be a wus). The stream, you litterly have to put it into the eyes...a mouth shot might make it stop and go huh, but it's just too small a stream/target. If you got a mean charging pit after you, trust me, fog pattern works best and assuming you will be trying to get away the other direction, no blowback to worry about. Dogs will chase you if you run. Stop, raise your hands and in meanest voice you can scream no, stop. Stand your ground. It's a territory thing-back slowly away when you have advantage.

If you can't find any good spray? Carry a can of wasp & hornet spray. Most are
pretty accurate to 25ft and will drop a bumble bee in flight (especially Ortho).
I don't condone hurting animals, but most states have leash/chain/enclosure
laws and if it is hell bent on tearing you up, I'd probably hose it good. A big
dog can really wreck your calf muscles and do irreparable damage. Most big
dogs will eventually go for the throat (an ingrained fighting response). A chihuahua has a very infectious bite like an alligator and usually will require a big
course of antibiotics. I nearly lost my leg when about 10 to a hunk a overzealous little one removed from front of my shin. Took a month to heal...
Also, have heard that the Wasp & Hornet spray works against intruders as an
emergency defense as an elderly senior already has used it. It worked. Cops
found him coughing and acting like a nut in the yard when they got there (neighbor heard her and called). It only costs about $2.49 a can and the politicians haven't banned it yet. Don't think any cop would question your
carry of this over pepper spray (where not legal to carry). Just say I'm deathly
allergic to bees!!!! Remember when it's your life vs. the bad thing, you're coming home at the end of the day!
